Tucked away off the main road in the heart of the Lake District, this Grade II listed traditional multi-room pub is ever popular with residents and visitors, the young and old, walkers, climbers and mountain bikers, artists and writers.
With no background music, no noisy games machines, no big screen televisions, and no meals, the Rule is just the place to relax and have a drink and a chat.
Enjoy the extensive range of cask beers, draught lagers and ciders, fine wines, malt whiskies, gins, and other spirits in comfortable traditionally furnished rooms, in the secluded sun-trap beer garden, or by the open fire.
Take advantage of the free WiFi, daily newspapers, books and magazines, selection of board games and dart board. Dogs are welcome throughout and water bowls are always available.
John and Margret have been welcoming people to the Golden Rule since 1981, and they and their team look forward to welcoming you too.

The best pub in Ambleside by a country mile. It's always visited when we are there for the day but this time 13 of us were there for the weekend so it was visited 5times. Great beer! Well kept, good price and good selection. Atmosphere always good too with the right level of busyness. Of course we will be back! Minimal food maximum beer.
Really enjoyed my visit last night, bar staff were friendly and welcoming the place itself is really cosy with a great choice of drinks, also has a large flat screen TV showing spots. All in all a real good pub. Highly recommend 👌👍
Off main tourist route in Ambleside, worth the short detour. Proper traditional pub, not messed with. A wet pub (no food). It's a Robinson's pud, not normally my favourite, but a big choice of real ale, all good. Popular with walkers. It has outside seating. Well worth a visit.
We visited on a wet autumn for an afternoon beer. Fantastic pub. Split levels . Some quirky drinking areas. Robinsons beer is not my favourite, but the ale was well kept. Service was good.
Probably serves the best beer In Ambleside. I've tried most of the pubs in the town and this is the one that consistently serves a good range of well kept Ales. I always think you can tell a well kept beer by the way the heads clings to the sides all the way down; each of the beers I tried easily passed the test. The staff are always prompt but friendly. The pub sprawls across a number of rooms ensuring there is always somewhere to sit. Outside there are a few tables and chairs. If you are looking for a traditional English pub in Ambleside this is the one to head for. The first pint here after a long hike is simply sublime as is the pork pie to accompany it. There is no food other than crisps and the pork pies but good to just have a traditional drinking pub.
