About us

Situated at the top of the hill in between Lake Windermere and Hawkshead Village, surrounded by beautiful scenery, popular walking and cycling trails and of course the countryside which Beatrix Potter drew her inspiration from. We are a classic, yet contemporary Lake District Bed & Breakfast, which has recently been renovated and lovingly restored to its former glory. We now have 14 beautiful en-suite bedrooms, which are a selection of superking size, family and twin rooms, all rooms have power showers, 32” flat screen TVs, tea and coffee facilities and everything you would want from Lake District B&B.

We are passionate about the Lakes, and strive to produce a local, sourcing as much produce as possible from the from the bountiful area in which we sit, be that the Real Ales, the game for our Steak & Flakebridge Cheese Pie or the sausages for our Cumbrian Breakfast which of course no true Lake District B&B would be without.

We would like to welcome all to our little Inn, which offers dog friendly accommodation for those wishing to bring their dog away for a holiday in the Lakes. Whether you are popping in for a pint or coming to stay in the Lake District Bed & Breakfast, our doors are open and our fires are on.

Food is served all day, 12 noon to 3pm. 5pm until 9pm.

Go with humble expectations. It’s not what it used to be simply because it needs big investment that doesn’t look likely in the near future. The new management are lovely. Hoping they can shift the menu to play to their strengths as Mauritians rather than use the old chefs to turn out so-so English food. The beds are comfortable enough and the place clean. Furnishings are on worn out side of their life. But it is still the Cuckoo Brow Inn and it’s great. So, as I say, if you have stayed before then just adjust your expectations and you’ll still enjoy it.

I don't want this to sound too critical as I really enjoyed my stay. But there are some items that would have made my stay even better. That is some of the fixtures and items within the room weren't perfect. Poorly installed WC which isn't the correct pan for the frame and it sits too low. (My job includes high end apartments and plumbing defects). Also the toilet seat is incorrect and therefore working loose. The room appears freshly painted and the fixtures hadn't been removed therefore covered in paint. So take these items away. Again I must stress that I really enjoyed my stay but offer some constructive criticism as to what I would expect. I had breakfast included which was very good, the evening meals although are on the expensive side they are excellent and offer large portions, I struggled to finish each meal due the portions. It just would have been better to have a special or two to add a bit more choice and I know only one vegetarian option and no Vegan will mean some will struggle. Again, I must stress the food was excellent as to quality! Other improvements I would suggest would be a charging point for my EV, again I managed to get around but it would have been great to be able to charge at evenings. Please take these comments as purely my personal suggestions as to what I must say was great few days away, I will be back (if they allow me!) Thanks to the staff for a great relaxing break. Just some items do need improvement or could offer an even better experience.

Stayed with friends for first time since Covid having been coming for several years before. Did not disappoint! Cozy, dogs everywhere, fires lit and very friendly staff. The food was excellent . Slightly limited menu but didn’t mind that as quality so good. However if you were staying for longer than three nights you may end up repeat ordering. Having said that staff said extended menu choices in progress. Beer and wines lovely. If I was picky I would say our bathroom needed a bit of an update. Still very clean. Prices still very competitive and we love the place.. we will be back! Would just like to add that lighting needs dimming, far too bright for convivial atmosphere, management please note as I see other people have mentioned this. Turn off overhead spotlights, keep wall lights and candles on tables would be perfect.

Could be better. We reserved a table in advance and specifically asked for one by the window. We didn’t get one by the window even though they had some available. The staff are polite and friendly but we felt very rushed. We’d hadn’t sat down and they were asking for a drinks order. We hadn’t even looked at the menu and they were over asking for our food order. We said give us a minute and they gave us literally a minute, and again and again - we must have been asked 5 times in five minutes if we were ready to order. The food was nice when it arrived but they started clearing plates while people were still eating. They asked if we wanted a dessert menu to which we said yes but then we got given the bill anyway. We did order dessert and it was okay. I can understand this level of rushing if the restaurant was really busy but it was maybe 2/3 full. We would have had another drink but we felt rushed, plus the lighting is way too bright for it to feel like a cosy pub. Overall it wasn’t bad but I think they just need to get the service and the ambience right. Very dog friendly.

We went here on a whim as were staying nearby & reviews were great. This was probably my favourite meal I’d had all week in the lakes! The pan fried cod was delicious and my husband said the pie was incredible-the best steak pie he’d ever had. Really highly recommend this place, the service was incredible and food unforgettable
