You will find The Cross Keys in Goodramgate York within a short stroll of York Station, York Minster and Yorvik Viking Centre - however you won't find another like it.
Step in to discover a traditional pub of unique character, revered for its eclectic range of real ales and its quality pub food, which are served, as they should be, with a generous measure of famous British hospitality.
The Cross Keys is a snug and familiar Victorian pub probably dating back to the late 1800's and is located in the main central shopping street of Goodramgate and within a stone's throw of York Minster. This area was created in the Viking era and is chronicled through the history and magnificence of architecture, war, politics and social evolution, much of it documented by the epochs of the nearby Minster and Yorvik Viking Centre.
It's hard to believe from looking at it today, but York Minster was originally built in 627 as a small wooden church for the baptism of the Anglo Saxon King, Edwin of Northumbria and today contains the world's largest single expanse of medieval stained glass.
Goodramgate exhibits wonderful architecture spanning many centuries and some of its finest illustrations are the early English examples of medieval 'jettied' houses, where the first floor would overhang the lower part for the disposal of sanitation waste. Just round the corner is Treasurer's House, the first house to be donated to The National Trust because of its history spanning 2000 years, beginning with an authentic Roman Road located through the cellar.

Had lunch here on a day out to the York Christmas Market. A traditional Victorian pub in a busy central location, it's really handy for the Minster and only a couple of minutes walk from Monk Bar and the city walls. The outside seating area has a great view of the Minster. Inside, there's a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, traditional decor and furnishings, log fires and Sky TV. Nicely decorated for Christmas. Clean downstairs toilets. There's a roomy bar lounge, but I had my lunch in the cosy snug at the back of the pub. The staff were hospitable and friendly, and although it was quite busy, service was quick and attentive. There's an extensive drinks menu with an amazing variety of gins, real ale, wines and spirits, and they also serve hot drinks. Excellent choice of starters and mains, more imaginative than your average pub food, and a wonderful selection of homemade pies. Opted for the wild boar and chorizo pie with clotted cream mash, thyme roasted carrots and a jug of rich gravy. Well cooked, hot, good quality ingredients and full of flavour. Had a nice Merlot to accompany the meal. The desserts looked really good, but I was just too full! The price was reasonable too. Would recommend this pub for lunch if you're visiting York.
Had a couple of drinks here. The atmosphere was lively. Was nice and warm and the lovely young lass who served us was friendly ☆
Great food and pies were delicious. Good selection of drinks, and reasonably priced. Perfect spot for a quick dinner, drink, etc.
Nice pub. Used to go a lot about 15 years ago. On the night I visited it sadly was very empty and not much of an atmosphere. Nevertheless still a nice pub.
Came and had a fantastic late lunch and the food was amazing especially the signature burger. I saw they had a fantastic range of gin that I couldn't sample due to driving home but if I was local I'd be coming more often for sure. Friendly and helpful staff made us feel welcome and the decor was great. Thank you for an wonderful experience
