About us

The Cross Keys re opened just in time for her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee on the 2nd of June 2012. The opening followed a £660,000 restoration, the work created a 6 bedroom Boutique Hotel , a completely unique offer now called ‘Molly’s Coffee and Cake Shop’, an all-new 100 cover dining experience and wine led bar area.

The bar and dining is supported by a newly constructed 80sqm kitchen, visible to those brave enough to sit outside on the terrace or passing by into Molly’s.

The Cross Keys Offers; delicious fresh food, amazing wines and bedrooms to die for, all complimented by a marriage of the Cross Keys Elizabethan architecture and contemporary design.

The building dates back some 850 years and is one of the most important buildings architecturally and commercially in the centre of Saffron Walden.

I loved this quaint hotel. Lovely cosy room which was comfortably warm. Nice large comfy bed although room a tad on the small side. Totally manageable though as only staying one night. I didn’t know about the ‘haunted’ rumours before booking but I didn’t experience anything. Excellent value for money with excellent breakfast included.

Don't think I'll be returning for food in the near future. Staff very friendly but service extremely slow. On ordering, lots of the menu were not available.after waiting an extremely long time for mains my fish and chips came up with literally 7 chunky chips, I was brought some more only to be told that the chef is under instruction by management to only give that small amount. We ordered sweet, but had to ask 3 times before it came, I admit we didn't have to pay for the sweet but that's not the point. Not a good experience.

We’ve been having lunch at the Cross Keys at Christmas for many years now but yesterday’s experience may unfortunately bring that to an end. The specials board, though on display, was not available. We were only told this when our food order was being taken. This was twenty minutes after we sat down. With two vegans in our party this only left one main course option which was disappointing. Our meal took one and a quarter hours to arrive, with us asking where it was on two occasions. We were left with insufficient time for a dessert due to all of the delays and, after quite a wait to pay the bill, left two hours after our arrival. There were plenty of staff on duty in the restaurant so I can only assume the kitchen was understaffed. The attitude of our servers was very functional. Not unfriendly but equally not particularly welcoming. Being British of course, we still paid the service charge which had been added to our bill. We left frustrated and really hope this was an isolated occurrence as we’ve always enjoyed our meals here in past years.

We had a really lovely overnight break at the Cross Keys Hotel. Very reasonably priced. Check in quick and efficient. Staff friendly and helpful. Evening meal good and cosy setting. Breakfast very generous. Room very atmospheric - heating a little volatile but it is a very ancient property. Overall a great stay - thank you.
