About us

Serving the Lemsford community for more than 200 years, the building was originally a farmhouse called Hornbeam Hall. Its use as an inn dates back to 1756 when it was called The Chequers. In 1777 Searanckes Brewery of Hatfield acquired the building which remained as The Chequers until 1968 when it was renamed The Crooked Chimney after its distinctive crooked brick chimney.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Went at lunchtime and was a good experience, restaurant area was undergoing work so only bar area accessible. Food was good quality and service prompt. Chose from the set lunch menu 3 course at £20.50 offering good value for money.

Beautiful charming turn of the century pub with loads of atmosphere. Very cosy setting with real oak beams and lounge furniture to make your visit a comfortable one.

Everything about this place was great! When I came in I got greeted by friendly staff who were extremely helpful throughout the night. Along with the service, the food did not disappoint. I had the steak sandwich with chunky chips and it was amazing! I would highly recommend.

Had the tastiest roast ever today! Cosy atmosphere. Trio roast, cauliflower cheese, pigs in blankets. The works! Fabulous atmosphere & service from Ellie & all the staff! Will be back very soon. Yummy! Thank you

Really disappointed! Went for a meal after hearing good things only to turn up and be told “no green veg, no Yorkshire puddings, no parsnips, no pie and no fish and chips” Tried to stay positive anyway so we all sat down to order, member of staff came back to say there’s now no beef! We asked if we could have extra carrots and roast potatoes to make up for the lack of EVERYTHING else. Got 5 tiny roasties .. carrots were freezing and rock solid. Felt bad complaining because obviously it’s not the servers fault, but we absolutely will not be going again. Nearly £20 per dish and no compensation!
