Lovely home made food .. we eat there quite regularly and never disappointed. Watch out for the ghost in the bar .. twice in recent weeks glasses have either moved along the bar or been thrown onto the floor.... with no one in the vicinity (we witnessed the events) ... spooky!! 👻
Didn't stay at hotel but booked in for an evening meal. Booking recommended due to popularity. Fantastic food. Service was slow due to it being busy and a lot of people booking in for a wedding next day.
train your staff and stop them girning / smirking / huffing and puffing over your guests thinking booking dinner might be an actual possibility / holding the door open for you / serving you a drink at the bar etc. trust me, you ain’t all that. potholes in drive, lumpy beds, noisy plumbing, toilet had be hand-cranked to flush, noisy bar. the receptionist on nights was lovely.
My friend from America and I visited for one night in early September while we toured Wigtown, Castle Douglas and Kirckudbright. I'll start with the positives. It's a beautiful historical looking hotel from the outside. The staff could not have been friendlier and the customer service was excellent. We booked the last room available and it definitely showed. This room should never have been rented. It was truly awful. Dirty, mouldy and extremely dated. The beds were like toddler beds. They seem to think that a foam mattress topper equates to a mattress. Me and my back can tell you it definitely does not. I would have gone away thinking this was what all the rooms were like but, on our way out, I was able to see into some of the other rooms while they were being cleaned. A STARK difference. They looked more modern with nicer furniture. Though some of it still looked past its best and the mattresses looked equally flimsy. We ate dinner in the restaurant and we were seated in a room that was clearly designed for hosting funeral teas. Fold-away tables and a bare room with no ambience. The food was pretty good. Service was fast and wait staff were friendly. Breakfast was decent and staff were bright and welcoming in the morning.
Family lunch meet up in the Brasserie. Lighting was so low we struggled to read the menu's. Needs upgrading. Food quality however was very good though service was slow. Two children at the table were beginning to get tetchy!! Staff attentive and were doing their best but not enough of them on duty! They were apologising for the wait. (Table booked for 1pm. Food arrived just after 2pm) Outside tables seemed to be very busy!
