This pub is named after a former editor of the Northern Echo who went on to become one of the most influential men of his age. William Stead submitted several articles to the Northern Echo which were so well received that, in 1871, he was offered the editor’s chair without ever having set foot inside a newspaper office. He was in charge at the Northern Echo for nine years, before moving on. His new journalism paved the way for today’s tabloid press. One of the most influential men of his age, Stead was one of those who lost their lives on board the Titanic in 1912.
I used to come in regularly for breakfast but haven't been in for a while. Called in for breakfast, there was an issue with food which was promptly sorted by a lovely member of staff Dan. He was very helpful I was in with my 8 month old daughter and he even went to the effort of refilling my drink to make my life easier. I noticed his customer service was exceptional with every customer. Spoke to a lovely couple on next table who gave me his name as I explained I wanted to mention him in my review. Hes an asset to the place
Went for breakfast, came very fast and a lot of selection. Really cannot fault the prices, a breakfast muffin with unlimited coffee for under £4. American pancakes also worth a go!
I decided to take the family for a light lunch as a regular customer, however today’s experience wasn’t great. We decided to go for the 10 inch wrap option which turned out to be a disaster. The contents within the wrap were non existent, over done chips and hardly any chicken or dressing. Staff require better training, one particular individual vanished when challenged about the quality of the food and service. I did get a refund for the food only, but never got offered a replacement or a full refund for all the meals due to the quality of service. Observe the pictures and judge for yourself. 🤔😕 This needs to improve in my opinion as the town is now becoming a hotspot for dining and has a buzz. Merry Christmas Wetherspoons 🌲🎅🍺
This is my second time visiting the William Stead pub. The staff member that dealt with me was very friendly. I had the afternoon deal fish & chips with green peas and a Leffe beer. The fish was on point, nice crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I’ll definitely come back again.
Horrendous. Half portions of food, half cooked chips. It's not particularly busy, lots of empty tables. We were still hungry from the lack of food on the mains plate, so had pudding...something hubby can never fit in. Told the staff about the quality of the last 'course', nothing done except for money taken for the pudding choices. Oh. My. Goodness. You know when you wish you hadnt bothered! Totally swearable. Took it back to the bar and asked for a replacement, as earlier advised we shoukd have done with the main..as the custard was thin and the caked smoothered in scraped lumps. You know when you wish you hadnt bothered?! £30 down. Hungry. Just ultimately feeling robbed and cheated. Will never return.

The Red Lion Priestgate Darlington is one of the oldest pubs in the heart of Town Centre. This wonderful traditional pub has an excellent reputation for cask ale and lunchtime value for money food and drink.
