About us

This building stands on the site of three private residences, similar to the adjacent properties built in the early 19th century. This short row was called Albion Place, now the street name for what was the west end of Borough Road. Doctor Henry Renney (‘Public Vaccinator’ for Sunderland) was living at Albion Place in 1890. Ten years later, his thoughts on public vaccination were published in the British Medical Journal. The doctor advocated the use of the Cooper Rose vaccinator which he carried with ‘half an ounce of antiseptic, more than enough for nine arms’.

The Cooper Rose in Sunderland is a charming pub that ticks all the boxes for a great night out. Whether you're after a refreshing drink, friendly conversation, or a laid-back atmosphere, this pub delivers on all fronts. Highly recommended for a memorable pub experience in Sunderland!

Food wasn't great. The burger was black burnt on 1 side. I chose the Xmas turkey. It was cheap slices if turkey. The mash wasn't real mash and had a crust from the microwave on it. Not much gravy and overall doubt I'd eat here again.

The staff took our order, and my son can't have cheese because of a genetic malfunction. Milk products, when ingested, will poison his liver. It was confirmed 3 times "no cheese." If I hadn't noticed the cheese, he would have ended up extremely ill and possibly hospitalised. We sent the order back, and they replaced it with the correct order. My partners order was wrong, but he ate it anyway, and my mixed grill came with cold gammon and cold steak, tough as old boots. What a let down. The restaurant was not particularly busy, so that's no excuse. The fry up we had in the morning was really good, that's why we went back for dinner.
