The Glynne Arms is a 200 year old traditional coaching inn which has recently undergone a complete restoration inside and out, bringing it back to life. Its philosophy is simple; to provide a warm, relaxed pub environment and excellent food in the restaur
The Glynne Arms, constructed around 1812, was named in honour of the Glynne Family, whose ancestral seat was Hawarden Castle. Sir Stephen Glynne, the 9th baronet, succeeded to the baronetcy in 1815 and became Liberal MP for Flint; it was through this connection that his sister, Catherine Glynne, met the famous whig politician and later Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone, whom she married. The Gladstones lived at Hawarden Castle and when Stephen died in 1874, the Hawarden Estate passed to William and Catherine’s eldest son, William Henry, also a Liberal MP and an accomplished singer, organist and composer.
Hawarden developed as a mining village – the estate quarry in Tinkers Dale was where Ewloe sandstone was mined – and the workers and the Friendly Societies would gather at The Glynne, which was more of a coffee house and a hotel than a drinking den. It was known as ‘the people’s public house’. When the railway line opened in 1890, Hawarden found itself the object of interest for curious tourists who came to see where Prime Minister William Gladstone and his family lived.
In 1906 The Glynne underwent refurbishment and was leased to the People’s Refreshment House Association, out of which evolved the Public House Trust Association, one of whose underlying principles was that “The general arrangement and management of the house shall be on the lines of a house of refreshment, instead of a mere drinking bar.”
Visitors to the Chester Races used The Glynne as a hotel, as did the blossoming Hawarden Cricket Club. Part of what is now the pub housed the local butcher; and a cattle market was periodically held outside. Although it became a popular spot for tourists to stay, attracting patrons of all social classes, it never lost its character as a place ‘for the village’.
Hawarden Estate and Castle are now under the stewardship of Sir William Gladstone and his son Charlie. Backed up by the enthusiasm of Charlie’s family and a team of professionals working at Hawarden, they have now restored The Glynne to its former glory, and more. The Glynne now once again takes its place at the heart of this traditionally hard-working, tightly-knit and patriotic community.

Great experience. Super attentive waitress. Hot food, good portion sizes. Will visit again.
Feels much improved over the last couple of years. The manager kindly accommodated me and my family on Boxing Day despite no reservation in advance and we had a lovely meal. My partner had an incredible vegetarian main and I had a selection of starters and some delicious house chips. My son had an amazing fish finger sandwich. The atmosphere was nice and lively and the setting is as nice as you could want with the Gladstone estate a stones throw away. Highly recommended.
Lovely olde worlde feel. Leather armchairs by the fire and long conversations with friends over coffee or nice glass of red. Great food , great service and an all round convivial place to meet up .
Nice little pub with small but interesting menu. I chose the Haddock and chips which was delicious with crunchy beer vatter and triple cooked chips. Son had the beef burger and onion rings as a side order. Tge burger was very tasty and the onion rings mouth wateringly good. Definitely worth visiting.
We’ve eaten here twice over the festive period and we weren’t disappointed. The food and service were excellent. The atmosphere cosy and traditional. We will be back again I’m sure! We returned again and enjoyed the beer battered fish and chips, salt and pepper Casheau nuts and warm soda bread and salted butter from the Hawarden estate.
