Excellent meal and service let down by poor wine. The Merlot on offer was bitter and no where to the standard of South African and Australian red merlot. The ladies enjoyed the pink Merlot.
Visited for a family breakfast. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Service was rather slow, though. The food was good, there was plenty of selection and a good-sized breakfast. Good ambience.
We went for Xmas day lunch. The young man that served us was very good and efficient. As for the meal, I had the "traditional" Xmas meal, I had no sprouts and to say that I was having "tender stem broccoli", well, let's put it this way, the knife wouldn't cut it! We were one of the first to be served and yet my stuffing (I think that's what it was!) and the pig in blanket, were very well done and so I left them. For £89 per person, I would have expected "real" carved turkey, but, it was round! The starter and sweet were beautiful. Would I go again for Xmas lunch? Not at £89, I could feed a good few people for that money, if it wasn't for me being so lazy!!
Really like this pub as it's central in Congleton town with car parking available. I've never stayed at the hotel but I have had a meal in the restaurant which was very good, with good service. They do have a good menu with plenty of choice so would recommend. Also had a drink in the bar which is nicely decorated with comfortable seating, we went as they have a few hours on a Friday from 6.30 to 9 for half price cocktails. Disappointing though as not much choice on the cocktails & only the house wine included in the deal so the Merlot wine we chose was much more expensive. Do check the prices when buying drinks as we paid different prices for the same order, not good.
Who knew Congleton was such an interesting place and The Lion & Swan is a perfect fit. Beautifully clean and the staff are personable, friendly not intrusive. Our room was superb. Food good though maybe a little limited for me which would be my only observation to not go 5 stars outright. The location is really convenient for walking to all the town amenities and for taking a car to the lovely National Trust properties around. Parking and access easy.
