About us

This pub takes its name from one of Altrincham’s old inns – The Unicorn Hotel. An original Saxon settlement stood on this site. More recently, it was a stopping point for coaches. Its wayside inns included the long-gone Red Lion, where Bonnie Prince Charlie’s troops came in 1745, and The Unicorn Hotel. The Unicorn was originally built by Lord Delamer, in 1849, as Altrincham’s first town hall. In the 1990s, it became the Hogshead pub, now in Stamford New Road.

I met friends for a catch up in the afternoon, it was quiet which was good for us to chat. The range of beers is good and great prices. The building is newer than most Weatherspoons so lacks any interest or character.

Have previously had a decent visit. This time it was not so great. Cold breakfast, congealed beans. It seems the kitchen has gone down hill, I hope they read these reviews and fix it.

Very slow service and no apology. Order was wrong as one breakfast was missing an egg. The other breakfast’s eggs were rock hard. Beans cold. Toast wasn’t toast, but very slightly warmed bread. I know Wetherspoons is not meant to be the Ritz, but every other breakfast I’ve ever had in a ‘Spoons has been fine. This was just grim.

This is a picture of the “American Classic burger” it’s supposed to contain pickle, mustard, ketchup & red onion 😂 Honestly, don’t bother!

Excellent staff but the building is bland, an old shop I assume. Not one of my favourite Spoons but as usual excellent value. My pint of Peerless Langton Spin was under £2 with my CAMRA 50p off voucher. ( JOIN CAMRA...the Spoons vouchers alone almost cover your annual fee.) Needed food. Pizza n chips. Fine rather than a gastronomic delight according to Madge.
