About us

The Castlebay Hotel commands spectacular panoramic views over the natural harbour, ancient Kisimul Castle and the island of Vatersay beyond. The hotel provides a welcoming, comfortable and central base where you can eat great food, sample good wine and meet like minded guests, and even enjoy a pint in the pub next door with the locals!

It’s central location means that it's only a couple of minutes walk from the Oban ferry terminal and town centre where you’ll find a bank, post office and indian restaurant. The hotel has 15 rooms, a busy restaurant and the Castlebay Bar which is renowned for it's live music throughout the year.

Barra has often been described as the “Hebrides in Miniature” with its beautiful beaches, backed by ‘machair’ (meadows filled with wildflowers), its rocky eastern coast, and hilly interior. It is an island where you can walk, explore, play golf, take a boat trip, go kayaking, watch the wildlife – or just take it easy!.

I stayed here for one night in the MacNeil room, which was very comfortable and spacious, with a great view of the castle in the bay. Apparently this is the swankiest room so can’t speak for the others, but this room is modern and decorated and equipped to a high standard. If coming off the ferry turn right and it’s literally about 60 seconds’ drive away. I also had an evening meal and found the food very tasty and reasonably priced. The service was good although the woman who checked me in was also serving in the restaurant and checked me out again next morning. Hope she managed to get some sleep inbetween!

As previously stated by other travellers the bedrooms are in much need of updating. In particular the bathrooms. Hardly any cold water trickled out of our taps making showers tricky. The beds were clean and comfortable. Our evening meal was good tasty local dishes. The staff very friendly and helpful. We were told when we booked there would be somewhere undercover to park our bikes. This was not the case on arrival so this was disappointing . High price for the room compared to standard of facilities

The food is not being delivered to an acceptable standard, partner and I both had soup, his was piping hot, mine was just not. Main course, baked potato with tuna mayo and red onion, two minuscule slivers of red onion, there may also have been a mayonnaise shortage as the tuna appeared to be dry chunks and the potato itself had clearly been lying against a hot surface for some time as one side was thick, crispy, dry and inedible. I didn’t complain at the time as I know that each of my courses would have been whisked away and that would just result in us both eating alone, which was not the point of the day. Have stayed here, had breakfast, lunch and dinner here on many occasions and had perfectly good experiences, so please can you try to get on top of food checking before it leaves the kitchen. If I thought it was a poor new normal I wouldn’t visit again. The bill was a bit on the expensive side for lunch as well.

OK, so me and my daughter booked the twin vatersay room here for 3 nights and paid £150 deposit online. On arrival the staff were pleasant and welcoming, we were shown to our room, but sadly it all went downhill from that point. The room never reflected the photos online, pictures can deceive ones expectations. The shower room was very dated and quite grim, the sink filled with water with no plug on the drainage, soap dispenser empty, leaky shower and generally off putting. The kettle had a rusty element within and the external plastic was mucky, once I'd cleaned it with a wipe, it was apparent by the residue on the wipe that the kettle hadn't been cleaned for some time, yuk! The TV had a purple permanent vertical line running through the screen, which would of annoyed anyone viewing it. Admittedly, the wee young lad had fetched a brand new boxed TV to replace the faulty one. Sadly it wasn't enough for us, for 3 nights at £539 I would of expected a much better standard, the hotel is in need of a complete renovation. They kindly refunded our £150 deposit with no resistance and we found ourselves somewhere else to reside for our stay which was refreshingly much nicer.

Food was lovely. Stayed for two nights- can't honestly review room as we stayed in the disabled access room despite not being disabled, which was slightly different. Staff were lovely especially the waiter at breakfast. Would stay again.
