This was purpose built in 1937 as the Regal cinema. It was then the most up-to-date cinema in Cambridge, a veritable ‘palace’ – as it was dubbed by cinema-goers of the 1930s. Until recently, it had been in use as the ABC cinema.
We ordered fish and chips and gammon steak and portions was very small, cot's size was as makrel and 10 Oz steak as 5 oz.
Use to drink here on a friday/Saturday night many years ago. This year I've been visited on several occasions, and (now) finally left a review. The atmosphere is abit drab. In my opinion it's abit dark and stuffy. I was going to describe the place as "cheap and cheerful". Although only the cheap part is accurate. The prices are fair, and reflects in the quality and portion size of food on offer. The food isn't bad for what you're paying especially when you can get a drink included with your meal. If I'm looking for a few (cheap) drinks on a night out then this would be the place I'd drop by. If you're looking for something with atmosphere (and a good time) then I would give it a miss.
Another lovely Wetherspoons.. (and surprisingly the only one in Cambridge City) It stills has the Cinema feel, and plenty of information within detailing historical facts. There is a big screen (previously watched the Grand National) which is fab. Be warned.. it can get very busy and extremely loud on football match days. We wondered why there was such a huge Police presence. Whilst it was busy and loud, there was no trouble, just a fun atmosphere. On non football match days we have found it to be rather busy on all visits, albeit we have always found a table. There are a variety of seating areas within and an outside area too. If sat on the lower tier, it helps if the fire door is kept closed, as when open the smell of smoking wafts in. Whilst prices have increased, the drinks are still cheaper than other places. The staff are very friendly, helpful and approachable.. it is rather welcoming. When in Cambridge, this is always a place we return, and we will continue to do so. Totally recommend this Spoons...
Very fantastic Place, big and with a good Number of different beer. IPA Lager and so on. The food Is quite good with kind of meal from different country, fish and cheeps ocviusly are here.
The Regal is a very large and fairly comfortable JD Wetherspoon pub in the city centre of Cambridge. It covers two spacious levels. Food is streamlined JDW grub, but well presented and cheap, as are the beers. Prices have increased here, too, but it's still the cheapest food & drinks option in town. Altogether a fairly superior pub of its kind.
