About us

Ian, Andrew and the team welcome you to the John Barleycorn, our traditional thatched village country pub, full of character and charm that has been providing hospitality for over 350 years. Originally a beer or ale house in the 1600s it was then owned by the three Halliwell sisters. There have been many guardians and changes over the following centuries until the present day…

Inside you’ll find a cosy bar with comfy seats where all are welcome including muddy boots and four-legged friends. Our locals are a friendly bunch and always ready for a chat, you can enjoy a board game with your friends or take time for yourself. We want you to enjoy a relaxing and comfortable stay with us, so if you need anything please ask.

We’re all about sustainability and wherever possible use locally sourced seasonal produce and the freshest ingredients for our menus which are best described as fine British country fayre with a little flourish of French home cooking.

Our garden is the perfect spot for after work drinks. Handcrafted blankets are on hand if you’re feeling the chill and on blistering days you can borrow a boater and help yourself to some sun protection lotion. Whether you choose to dine in the restaurant, snack in the bar or graze alfresco, we like to think there’s a somewhere and something for everyone.

What an absolute gem of a place. Our room was really cosy but with plenty of space. Very nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable. The food was delicious. Our evening meal was enormous but really well cooked and presented, plus very reasonably priced. Breakfast was continental and there was plenty of it, with really good ingredients. We found this by sheer chance/luck but would definitely come back again. Duxford is very quiet but we like that and there is another pub in the village, if you want additional choice, but we didn't see the need as the Barleycorn was perfect!

Partner and I were in a difficult situation so needed somewhere to stay for a long period off time at a decent price. The Jon Barleycorn did just that and more! Very welcoming landlord and members off staff. They accommodated all off our needs and requests. The rooms were snug but warm with all the necessary items for our stay. Food for the price was good too. Highly recommended this cozey homely Inn:) Erin/James

Popped in here on a long drive up't north. They kept the kitchen open for me and the French onion soup was very enjoyable. The pub is beautiful, the food tasty and prices very reasonable. Highly recommended for a visit.

Have just stayed here for two nights, absolutely lovely rustic country pub. Rooms good with everything you need. Very quiet at night, which is good. Was made to feel very welcome by Ian, even though we arrived a little late for food on the first night they went out their way to ensure we got a meal. Well done to Andrew the chef, could not fault your meals, absolutely lovely and good portion sizes. Nice outdoor garden area. Will definitely stay again when back in the area.

Lovely pub with lots of history and was built in 1799. Low ceilings make the venue nice and intimate, could easily spend a lazy Sunday afternoon here. Beer garden and big car park to the rear of the pub. Food is served during set times and I would encourage you to book in advance as the kitchen is not always open. Only stopped for a quick rest and drink before back on the road. It is a Greene King pub with a good selection of beers, wines, spirits as well as soft drinks. Friendly staff.
