About us

Once upon a time there was a drinking club at Burghley House. It was founded by The 5th Earl of Exeter in 1684 and it was called The Honourable Order of Little Bedlam. It had an eclectic bunch of members: The Baptist Earl of Gainsborough was known as Greyhound, The Hon Charles Bertie was The Stag and The Earl of Denbigh was Tyger amongst other nefarious characters.

We are not sure who The Bull (rumoured to be The Hon Charles Cecil) and The Swan were and nor are we sure that the club dined at this historic Stamford Public House....but it is highly likely they did.

They would have drunk locally brewed ales, feasted on Burghley Estate and other local produce and created total bedlam. Things have a habit of coming round and we look forward to inviting you to dine on our local produce, sup our fine ales and obviously behave very, very well!

We've seven amazing quirky luxury bedrooms which are incredibly comfortable beds & great size showers and baths. James & the team look forward to hosting you.

Checking in was rather slow. The bar downstairs looked popular and cosy on a cold evening, plus there are additional facilities out back for warmer weather. Our room (6) was really nice in a national trust way. Bed was really comfortable and the bathroom had a rolltop bath and walk in shower. Some road noise. Full English breakfast plus a basket with fruit and juice, pastries and little cereal pots and the usual hot drinks and toast was all really good, with good service too. Handy for a walk around Burghley park, Stamford is a lovely place. Will happily come here again.

Sadly I was only here for a meeting so didn't partake in the beer, had to make do with a decent coffee... The bar is very nice and cozy, staff friendly... It's been a few years since I was here last and it's certainly improved

Menu showed prices as excluding vat which is unusual for a restaurant. It meant the bill was 20% higher than expected plus they added £8.50 service charge for service in the pub bar. I'm fairly sure that the vat exclusion was written on the menu but we did not see it before we were presented with the bill

Overall this is a very good hotel for the price. Very comfortable bed. Good location, within walking distance of the town and Corn Exchange. Free parking at sister hotel. Good breakfast included. Nice bathroom but not much space to put anything. Could do with better lighting in bedroom.

Love this hotel. Have stayed here twice recently. Quaint but high standard of everything. Lovely clean, spacious, quirky room with little touches like very posh tea/coffee and homemade cookies. Historic bar/restaurant (didn't eat there). Super breakfast (if you like REALLY smokey bacon, as I do). Great (I'm running out of superlatives) kitchen garden, where you can sit out for a drink and 'potting shed' where they have live music and show films. Free parking at sister hotel, a short walk up the road. Friendly and attentive staff. Very convenient for town centre. My sort of place.
