About us

Delicious gastro pub food, excellent wines and fantastic real ales including Brakspear Ordinary and Oxford Gold Organic, along with regular guests ales from the area.

Inside there are two main areas, The Well Bar and The Windmill Lounge, both with large open fires, original beams, and a relaxed pub atmosphere. There is a large sunny garden, and patio areas, ideal for a relaxing summer’s day. A further addition is our fantastic Function Room, ‘The Bull Room – Private Dining in the Country’. Seating up to 24 with glass barn doors out on to the lawn is perfect for your private celebration

The stunning scenery incorporates the "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" windmill perched on top of a steep ridge overlooking Turville. St. Mary the Virgin Church dating back to the 10th Century achieved its fame in the "Vicar of Dibley", which was based on Turville village and its inhabitants! "Good Night Mr. Tom" was also filmed in the village as are many of the "Midsomer Murders" episodes.

We get very busy on sunny days, and we'd hate for you to be disappointed, so if you're planning a visit please contact us to book a table.

We are a very popular pub among dog walkers and as such, dogs are welcome in all areas of the pub at all times. We like to look after our four-legged friends, so water and doggie treats are always available to keep them happy and refreshed after a long walk!.

I honestly could not get enough of the lamb and mint pie. I really wanted to order another one, immediately after finishing mine, but felt that the in-laws would look down on me. I've had a fair few pies in my time, having lived in the North West of England (I used to hunt pie shops down), but I can categorically say that this was the best pie I have eaten! Period. I loved the stringy texture of the lamb enriched with delicious mint, and I felt that the shortcrust pasty had the optimum thickness to ensure crunch and absolutely no undercooked middle. Thick gravy and proper chips - would have liked to be offered ketchup to go with my chips, but perhaps they have a "no ketchup with pie policy" - which I rate for record. I'm considering going back tomorrow morning and grabbing one for the road. Would 100% return, recommend, and drive out of my way to have one of these pies.

The day was dark, damp, cold and wet, so typical British winter really. Thank God for the Bull & Butcher which was the highlight of our damp day after a shortened hike through the woods. This is the quintessential old pub with a cheerful landlord, great (real) ale on tap, a log fire, locals with their dog dropping in for a pint, and the Sunday roast was out of the world and the crumble was just crumble-icious. As a long time expat, this met all my nostalgic fantasies of what an old world English pub should really be. Local, but friendly to visitors, lashings of good value food, jaunty staff and excellent beers. What's not to like?

After a wonderful walk in the countryside we came to eat in this pub and I must say that the place is very cozy. The service is on time and the food is really good. Be careful if you don't speak English well because the waiters have a very strong accent and sometimes is difficult to understand them. Despite this detail It's a nice place to try some home-style English food, especially pies.

It's a great little pub that's obviously trapped in the tide of passing tourist and walkers, but welcomes everyone like they were locals and been drinking there for year's. The "award winning pies" are well worthy of the title, gorgeous! Nice location to kill a couple of hours, good parking if you time it right I'd imagine. Wouldn't hesitate to return.

Lovely little country village pub. Always a friendly warm service and atmosphere from staff. Always look forward to going back.
