About us

Hello and a Warm Welcome from my wife Anca and myself, Catalin (Kat), at The White Hart, Whelpley Hill. A welcome mix of visitors and locals is found at The White Hart. We hope your visit to us will make you want to come and see us again.

Nestled in a tiny hamlet between Bovingdon and Chesham, The White Hart was originally an 18th Century timber framed barn. It then became, became, J White Hart pub: Originally a 15th century farmer’s cottage and a favourite for USAF during WWII. The officer’s mess was a shed in the garden. There is evidence of a tunnel from the cellar, possibly a priest run.

Whelpley Hill is a hamlet of Chesham. The name is probably from the Saxon ‘Hwelpa’s Hill’. Hwelpa is ancient English meaning puppy or young animal. There was also a family called ‘Whealply who lived in the village, who may have been livestock breeders. Sadly, the village was hit by the Great Plague 1592 to 1593 and with it much of its history was lost.

We arrived as a party of four late evening and the staff were very accommodating. It was a great atmosphere and the food arrived fairly promptly and was excellent quality - we had the Fish and Chips, Cumberland Sausage and the Rib Eye steak. All the dishes were excellent and very well presented. We will definitely be returning to this pub/restauranr.

We were blown away with the hospitality and great service! Came in without reservations for a quick bite. We were promptly seated and offered both the Christmas as the regular menu. We went for the Cod Cakes and Bangers & Mash and both were absolutely delicious! Our host told us their Sticky Toffee Pudding is a favourite and now we know why. Definitely one of the best Sticky Toffee Puddings we ever had. The pub was a former cottage and they managed to keep that cozy cottage feel. Two wood fire places were on, which made it very Christmassy. We’ll hope to come back some time!

What a delightful little pub. it seems very popular with locals, and passersby alike, a pub grub menu with all the favourites. The drinks and food are fairly priced with decent portions. The pub has a small but nice layout, with not one, but two log fires, great for a winter's night, it also has a nice little garden, which in the summer would be great to take advantage of. But for me above all this, the very friendly warm welcome you receive, is what I'm sure makes this such a popular place. If you want good food, a warm fire and friendly people, you won't go far wrong choosing this great pub.

Quick service, interesting menu, really tasty food. Although busy, they don’t seem rushed, got served quickly, drinks arrived quickly, just how it should be really. Doesn’t feel crammed, liked the interior, big log burner going, so overall really enjoyed the visit. Salt and pepper squid with delicious salad. Roast beef Cheese board Perfect Sunday!
