With its part-thatched roof and original period features, The White Swan is a charming, community pub that dates back almost 500 years. Low ceilings and open fires lend a cosy intimacy to this place – the best pub in Whitchurch for fresh food and fine ale
The White Swan was built in the 1600s, financed by a wealthy landowner. In its early years, the building was used as a cider brewery – with the garden set aside as an orchard to grow the apples. It wasn’t long before the premises started the selling the produce as well as making it - and a pub was born.
The location of the pub meant it backed on to an old pond, used to ‘duck’ witches in years gone by. Spectators would gather to witness the ducking, then head to the pub for refreshment and merriment.
There’s more recent history to discover in Whitchurch too. Just over the road from the pub, you’ll find The Firs – a secret location used to develop weapons for World War II. It’s known locally as “Winston Churchill’s Toyshop”.

It was our first visit since new people took over. We were very pleasantly surprised. Lovely warm welcome, decor has been updated and food was lovely, especially the chips! We'll be back!! Thank you.
Husband and I popped in here for lunch when the two other surrounding pubs we tried were fully booked. The lady behind the bar was very pleasant and offered us bar or restaurant seats so we chose the restaurant. Only a small room with a few tables but beautifully decorated and very warm and welcoming. We ordered the fish and chips as well as the sausage and mash and my god were they huge! Absolutely delicious but I had to box half of my fish and chips up for another meal since I had to admit defeat about half way through. Husband commented that the gravy on his sausage and mash was especially good. Would definitely recommend for a lovely weekend meal. Good atmosphere, lovely staff and great food.
Stopped here randomly on the way home from a trip out and extremely glad we did. The food was amazing, make sure you have a big appetite as the gammon egg and chips comes in a huge portion with extremely good quality tasty gammon. My girlfriend had the Swan burger which was also large with 2 big meat patties in it. The staff were extremely friendly and we were able to have a bit of banter with them. Highly recommended!
What an amazing place. Stopped for a quick lunch and found this great place. Family atmosphere, super friendly staff and locals who recomended lasagne which was one of the best we ever had, definitely home made. Lady owner/ manager checked few times during the meal if everything was fine about the food. Highly recommend to everyone, very cosy place. Loved it!
Impromptu Sunday lunch while on the road, but what a lovely find! Great options for roasts, so something for everyone, as well as a good selection of alternative meals. Service was warm and friendly, and the roast definitely lived up to expectations - definitely recommend for a chilled but delicious meal :)
