About us

The Britannia is an attractive, historic tavern nestled on the banks of the winding River Nene, a couple of miles from the centre of historic Northampton, and conveniently close to many of Northamptonshire's most impressive and important attractions. The Britannia lies less than two miles south of the spectacular Abington Park. Just west, towards the town's impressive centre, is Northampton Museum & Art Gallery which celebrates the town's proud shoemaking history, and the museum contains the white satin shoes worn by Queen Victoria on her wedding day, along with many other impressive artefacts. Whatever your reason for visiting this wonderful part of Northamptonshire, The Britannia is the perfect setting for enjoying delicious traditional pub food, and a bottle of fine wine or glass of cask ale on the banks of the River Nene. The charming Britannia pub has lain on the banks of the River Nene for several centuries, but the rich history of Northampton, and the county of Northamptonshire goes back a good deal further. A half-hour walk away lies Abington Park, where the ruins of a former village lie. Abington's important medieval manor house was mentioned in the 1086 Domesday book. This grand and leafy park lies just across Wellingborough Road from the County Ground, where Northampton County Cricket Club have played their home matches for over 125 years, and a venue for the 1999 Cricket World Cup. Amidst the medieval architecture of Northampton's town centre lies Northampton Museum and Art Gallery. This handsome structure in the city's Cultural Quarter has the world's biggest collection of historical footwear, including boots worn by Prince Albert, famed Victorian midget Tom Thumb, and most notably, the white satin shoes Queen Victoria wore on her wedding day on 10th February 1840.

The food was fantastic. I ordered the Rum Pork off the specials menu and it was amazing. The specials menu looks like it changes which is good so it's not always the same stuff. But they do have their main menu if you want that consistency. The staff were friendly and they have a phone up booking system that has an automated system that can book you in. We booked on a Saturday 30 mins before just to see if we could get a table and we did. Parking is free but make sure you put your registration in the computer. The staff did remind us of that which was nice. And just one more time... That pork was amazing...

Booked a table for 12.45 on the 14th December. My director was visiting from the USA, so thought we’d book up for a nice lunch. It wasn’t to be… Seated quickly, but took till 1.20pm for our drinks to arrive, starters followed about an hour later…. By this time people were beginning to leave, including a family with small children on the table next to us. We chased for our mains, but still another hour till that arrived - we requested dessert with mains, as needed to leave. We had already rebooked my directors train back to London once…. The quality of food was not great, my burger came with a few chips and 3 onions rings - for £18 shocking value. The staff were trying hard, but were overwhelmed. The place is a shambles and we shall not eat there again. Added 17/1/24 I did mail the management team on the 2nd January, as requested in their reply, but have had no response…..

Yesterday I had an opportunity to go for a reopening meal to Britannia with my mum who works there for over 5 years now. I have to say pub looks amazing! Bar is now at the entry to the pub so you’re welcomed by a friendly staff. I think it’s a great idea. The garden looks amazing too. Fabulous changes! Food was delicious. I don’t take food pictures when I’m out for a meal, but I thought I will this time to share. Everything tasted beautiful 🤤 Britannia is a great place to go for a meal with family and friends.

We're regular visitors to The Britannia and I must say it has come on leaps and bounds.. Service is always great, the food is spot on and the kids menu is fantastic value for money. Highly recommend the Sunday lunch, I've attached a photo of my daughters kids portion from this past weekend, it was just delicious and such a great size..I was looking forward to some cheesecake but just couldn't fit it in this time! It's a beautiful setting, it lovely sitting out by the water. Definitely worth a visit. I didn't get his name, but the guy seeing at the bar is a credit to you..
