About us

Roly and Helen Harries took over this traditional village pub in Puddletown, near Dorchester in May 2013. Keeping the very best of the old, they set about combining its warm, friendly country ambience with a cool, airy modern interior – part of a style that is reflected in their approach to the food and hospitality. Something for which this bar and restaurant is rapidly gaining a first-class reputation.

The food is home cooked, and where possible the ingredients are seasonal and sourced locally from friends or trusted specialist suppliers. The wines have been chosen to complement the menu, and there is always a range of excellent guest ales on tap.

Our new head chef has joined us from the Coventry Arms, Wimborne. Gary Pavitt has lived in Dorset since 2002 having trained in London, he is now heading up the kitchen team along with Mike and Jon creating seasonal menus of modern pub food.

Roly and Helen have lived in the village for six years with their sons Thomas & Ben and hope to combine a warm, family atmosphere with the very best food at accessible prices, as well as extending a friendly welcome to locals and visitors alike.

Wife and I stopped at the blue vinny today and found the service very good. There was a large xmas party already seated but we didn't have to wait long. I had fish and chips and it was first class. Really tasty fish and a good size too. Chips were delicious as was the tartare sauce. Wife had winter vegetable risotto and she said it was the nicest risotto dish she has ever had. A big well done to all concerned. Will definitely go back again, just wish we lived closer

The Blue Vinny is nice, but confused. I'm not sure it knows what it wants to be. Is The Blue Vinny a pub? A restaurant? Modern or traditional? There's hints that it wants to be a traditional pub, however it lacks a cosy, comfortable setting and instead opts for dining table & chairs throughout. A group of lads drinking & swearing loudly at the bar sat directly opposite a family with children is a perfect example of the juxtaposition The Blue Vinny finds itself in. The service was perfect and couldn't be faulted, the bar staff were attentive & polite. Starters were delicious, however our main was disappointing. The fish was too heavily battered and chips felt like they were trying to be 'triple-cooked' but instead just seemed over-cooked. A small ramekin of tartar sauce was so heavily packed with capers & gherkin that it was hardly a sauce at all. It was a shame when our starters showed such promise. After hearing so many good things about The Blue Vinny, it sadly didn't live up to expectation.

Our first Sunday lunch here and we've booked to come back in a couple of weeks. It's a lovely pub, great atmosphere and the roast beef and pork lunches were superb. The youngsters serving behind the bar and waiting on the tables were top notch; polite, efficient and attentive. Well kept ale (Butcombe) was a further bonus! We can't wait for our next visit.

Great find, whilst on a weekend away in Dorset. Lovely fire but the real gem was the food. Simply wow. Well done guys. Highly recommended
