About us

The Black Lion Bar & Hotel is located on Chapel Street, Manchester – the first street in the United Kingdom to be lit by gas way back in 1806 and was one of the main

roads in the country, making up part of the A6 from London to Glasgow.

Today it is home to artists’ studios, Salford Museum and Art Gallery, The University of Salford, great pubs and an ever-increasing number of businesses and brand new residences, meaning this historic area has an equally bright future. The walk begins on Blackfriars Bridge, which crosses the River Irwell and connects Manchester with its neighbouring city, Salford.

This bridge was opened in 1820 and connects Salford with Manchester city centre. To your right is Victoria Bridge, which stands on the site of the original Salford Bridge.

The bridge was the scene of one of the first battles of the English Civil War. During the war, Salford was strongly Royalist while Manchester was Parliamentarian. The siege of Manchester in September 1642, which started the Civil War, was launched from Salford, with between 3,000 and 4,000 Royalists attacking the town. The battle raged on Salford Bridge and on into Deansgate, where the first casualty of the war, Richard Percival, was shot dead. The attack eventually failed and the siege was lifted in October of the same year.

On the opposite side of Blackfriars Bridge, look left towards the newest link from Manchester to Salford, the Trinity Bridge. Designed by Santiago Calatrava, the bridge, which opened in 1995, connects the Lowry Hotel with Manchester’s central business district.

To your left on the corner of Blackfriars Bridge and Chapel Street is the Black Lion Hotel, which was the birthplace of the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, as it became known, was recognised as the trade association for the travelling funfair business.

Went for breakfast. Had to wait an hr for 2 full english breakfast. when it did arrive, most of it was cold. We ate it just so we could get on our way. Staff were friendly & place was clean.

Well priced for a lovely room with most things you could need - minus a hairdryer. Can hear noise from other guests quite easily but nothing unbearable. We had paid for a deluxe king room with a city view, photos advertised showed a large room with two big windows overlooking the city. We arrived and were put in a tiny room with a small window looking out onto a wall. We brought this up to the staff and even though they doubted whether they’d have a city view and bigger room available (even though that’s what we’d booked and paid a bit extra for) they did put us in the correct room as advertised. Breakfast which was included was lovely and cooked to our liking. Staff are easygoing

Very poor hotel. Hotel advertised “luxury” rooms. Mine was small and basic. Couldn’t reach the window without crawling across the bed. Drum and beat music from bar below (literally) shook the floor of the room until after 10pm. Wafer thin rooms so noise all night. Breakfast was instant coffee sachets with hot water from an urn. Cooked breakfast was reasonable. Wasn’t permitted to leave my luggage post check out for a couple of hours - had to walk it up to their sister hotel, the Mitre, where I was asked to leave it without ticket or proof of deposit there. When I returned it was still in the public place where I was asked to leave it. Staff at the Black Lion were not unhelpful, just a little uninterested. Chamber maid was good. It was a really poor hotel and would NOT recommend.

Ideal for a central stay , rooms are furnished in a modern style and facilities are excellent. Food was lovely in the bar and will return here most certain.

The ambiance is spot-on, with just the right balance of cozy and lively. We recently celebrated my husband's birthday at The Black Lion, and I can't recommend this place highly enough! From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was incredibly inviting and just perfect for our celebration. Special shout-out to the staff for their assistance during the pre-booking process. We were able to reserve a private room and pre-order some food. Everything was ready and perfect. If you're looking for a pub with an excellent atmosphere, and friendly staff, look no further!
