The Black Lion Hotel & Pub

The Black Lion Hotel is situated in the centre of Ellesmere, Shropshire. The Lion has a long history as a Coaching Inn, evidence of which still can be seen outside and in the car park. It is very close to the Llangollen Ellesmere Canal and nearby a mere that is popular with regular visitors.

The hotel offers a fantastic restaurant with a wide range of choice that is typically British. If you are not hungry, you can relax in the front bar that dates back to the Tudor era. There are also two snugs, one with an open fire that is very popular during the winter months. There is plenty of seating and areas with privacy should you require it. If you are looking for something more lively, there is a sports bar at the rear of the hotel screening live sports.

If the weather is good you can enjoy the fresh air with a wide choice of beverages in the large beer garden at the rear of the hotel. The Lion is fully beamed with many existing features still present to see. Upstairs there is a large function room and the hotel can accommodate up to fourteen adults. There are seven letting rooms. These are all en-suite and have king size beds.

Today we held my daughter and her new husbands wedding at The Black Lion, their room was beautiful. We used the function room upstairs. The food was amazing and the staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. They all went above and beyond what they needed to do. The whole day ran like a dream. So thank you all. Weddings can be stressful but thanks to the Black Lion team we relaxed with family and friends, danced and all went home happy. Lots of memories to keep

Historical building inside and out and warmly decorated too. Fantastic location and Ellesmere with it's meres, historic buildings and the closeness of the Llangollen canal right on it's doorstep makes it is a very special, attractive town no doubt. The staff were friendly and welcoming even though they were very busy with the Sunday lunch sittings. Finally managed to get two portions of chips and sat outside in the pleasant garden seating area with the dogs. The selection of drinks was great and my two pints of "Oblivion" real cask ale on tap was divine.

On arrival this evening, we were warmly welcomed, but told there would be a 40 minute wait for food as a table of 8 had just ordered!!!! I did find this slightly strange, as a pub chef myself, 8 really is not a big deal. My husband and I took a seat in the bar area, and ordered our food. We did have to ask for our table to be cleaned (there were only 4 other people in the bar) My husband ordered the curry of the day, and I ordered the steak pie. Our food duly arrived just within the 40 minutes, alas, it went very quickly down hill. My pie pastry was completely raw, not just a little bit, but completely. The waitress took the offending dish away. 30 minutes later, my husband had finished his meal, and we had had another drink, and my meal was still nowhere to be seen. We decided to call it a day, and my husband went to pay the bill, and cancel my meal, I really didn't want to eat alone, we had gone out to eat together. Whilst my husband was at the bar paying, the waitress came to me and asked "do you want your pie or not, because it's ready" it was a little too late, my husband enjoyed his meal, but didn't particularly enjoy eating on his own, had we known how long it would take to replace mine, we would probably have left sooner. The barman was very polite, but there was no recompense for our problems, sadly I left just as hungry as when I arrived, such a shame as the black lion used to be the place to eat in Ellesmere, I should know, I worked in the kitchen there for a few years. Thankfully the fish and chips I had in the car going home were gorgeous.
