This friendly, family run pub and hotel offers year-round bed and breakfast accommodation, restaurant and bar meals and a well stocked bar with traditional cask ales and wines from around the world.
The Black Bull has a spacious bar area, with informal seating, stools at the bar, and plenty of standing room for busier nights! The enclosed beer garden to the rear of the pub contains several unusual tables, and is very popular on sunny afternoons. During the winter we have an open fire; very welcoming when returning from a wet, windy walk!
With provision for children, secure storage for cycles, a packed lunch making service, and dogs permitted when accompanied by well behaved owners, we try to offer something for everyone!.
I stayed here as I was working in the location. When I asked what time breakfast was, I was informed that it was 08:00 - 10:00. As I needed to set off earlier than that I asked if it was possible for some jogurt and some fruit. I was told that "we don't have that, we only do cooked breakfast".đŸ¤” There was no offer of getting me either, even though there was a supermarket just a 5 minute walk away. I don't know about you, but when I am paying over £100 for a room for one night. I think an option for breakfast should be made available. I had to go out and buy my own breakfast from the nearby supermarket. Not good. The bedroom is basic and the bathroom was dated. Several of the tiles have been replaced with a plaster patch and then painted over. I also felt that the staircase up to the rooms was dirty. I found that the room was noisy from the bar below, so if you wanted a quiet early night, no chance. I feel that because the hotel is on the Coast to Coast route, that business must come easy as there are limited places to stay. Would I stay again or recommend, probably NO. That said choice is limited. I didn't eat, so can't comment on the food. If you find my honest review useful, please follow me and have a look at my other reviews. TIA
Great pub , traditional menu and staff very friendly and welcoming. Would recommend the sticky toffee pudding a great winter pud.
Decent village pub. Booked fairly last minute for dinner but the online booking worked well. Good pub menu. Our group had a combination of steak pie and gammon mains. Both were very good. Had a nice feel to it with a roaring coal fire. Plenty of free parking outside. Lady behind the bar was friendly and welcoming.
Nice pub, lots of country character but on the high street. We chose it due to proximity and more importantly, it was pet friendly. Nice traditional decor and the staff were friendly enough. The food was a little over priced for the quality but it was overall a nice evening.
Food was lovely and well priced, the problem was there wasn't much of it, a lot off the menu unavailable and portions small. Nice pub though with friendly staff and dog friendly which is great, really tasty food
