We are excited to announce that our exclusive ale, prepared by local Cheviot Brewery is now available on draught in the pub! After the successful launch on Friday 22 March, our visitors, as well as locals will have an opportunity to enjoy a fresh, truly local ale, brewed only 5 minutes from the pub!
Mattia Marras, the General Manager of the Black Bull pub introduced the idea of the unique Black Bull beer to the Cheviot brewery owners around February, and since then they have all been working collaboratively to create something special for the customers of the Black Bull. Mattia, with his personal passion for the craft beer and long years of studying and discovering new flavours of malts and hops, supported Cheviot owners in the development of the Black bull ale. We are certain that this initiative will show our commitment to the local community and strengthen the relationship between locals and the businesses on the estate.
Mattia states "since reopening we have decided to focus on local products as much as possible and we are delighted that Cheviot Brewery has agreed to partner with us. The Black Bull Pale Ale has been developed over months of testing and is assured to be flying off the pump"
Jonathan from Cheviot Brewery is also delighted with the initiative:
"Since July 2018, when we produced our first brews, the support we have had from the people and businesses around the Ford & Etal estate has been fantastic. The Black Bull at Etal has been no exception, serving our ale since day one. It has been great to develop an exclusive ale with The Black Bull for their customers to enjoy alongside our regular beers.

Black Bull EtAle is a Triple hopped dark bitter predominantly featuring the popular Fuggle hop to balance the rich blend of crystal malts and we hope becomes a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike."
If you want to check all the changes out for yourself - pop in to The Black Bull for dinner and a pint! less

Like all good ideas, the idea to set up a brewery happened over a throw away remark over a beer, or maybe a few beers, in a Barcelona brewery tap in 2015. Whilst such ideas usually stay in the pub, Pete, Jonathan and Neil turned that remark into a serious conversation and a lot of research. Three years and two months later with ale in our fermenters and cask orders in place, this dream became a reality, thanks not only to a real desire to make great beer that we want to drink but with help and support from all over, not least from the Ford & Etal estate whom have renovated a derelict property on the estate to become Cheviot Brewery. less

The flour we use to make the dishes at the Black Bull comes from a local, Heatherslaw Mill.
Sitting on the banks of the River Till, Heatherslaw Mill is the only place in Northumberland where you can experience the sight, sound and smell of a traditional mill. You can learn how to operate the hoist, grind your own flour, try your hand at bread-making then take home some freshly milled flour to make your own wonderful creations at home.
There is a history of over 700 years of milling on this site. Powered by a 16 foot water wheel the fully-restored mill machinery, including three different pairs of millstones, still makes high quality, stoneground, wholemeal flour from wheat grown in the local fields.
You can explore the historic building, watch the milling process from beginning to end and see our 21st-Century millers at work. The family-friendly exhibition also gives kids a chance to explore a miller’s life. Educational visits are always welcome and there are a great range of experiences available for under 11s.
Why not stop for a relaxing cup of tea at the Heatherslaw Tearoom, and visit the gift shop to buy some delicious flour or cereals to take home. You can continue your day by exploring the visitor centre or take a trip on the famous Heatherslaw Light Railway over the bridge. less

During my childhood, I always watched and helped my mother and my grandmother cook for our Saturday lunch. It was a special day for the family, as it was when the whole family got together.
Whenever I saw them making some fresh pasta, the boiling water, the golden roast lamb cooking in the oven, and the scent that was in the air. I was in love with those sensations. So much so that I have made it my profession.
When I was 18, I started working in my first kitchen in my beloved home region, Sardinia (Italy). Year after year, I managed to work in good restaurants where I met chefs who mentored and inspired me. I learnt how to recognise and use the best products and refine my techniques.
My leap in quality came when I decided to invest my savings and join the best Italian School, Alma, directed by the greatest Italian chef Gualtiero Marchesi. It left me overwhelmed by passion and I started to work in Michelin starred restaurants.
When I am in the kitchen, I like to create quality food through the enhancement of the natural flavours of each ingredient. For this reason, at Black Bull, I always try to use products from local small farmers and artisans.
This way I’m sure of their high quality, and I am able to share their passion and love of the products.
“It is harmony that brings us together”

The Black Bull is now the centre hub of the Ford and Etal Estate as we tightly integrated local producers into everything we do. Our new Chef, Stefano, introduced a great traditional menu with Sardinian twist, which gives locals and visitors something fresh and exciting to try!
We have incorporated all of the below local businesses:
Our bread is made from flour from Heatherslaw Cornmill
Our beer comes from an Estate's Cheviot Brewery
Our sausages are sourced from a local farmer
Our goat's cheese comes from Blue House in Lowick
From now on, our pub aims to be at the heart of the Estate, so we invited all locals on Friday 8 March to our opening night, where we welcomed them with a complimentary glass of fizz, and served a grand buffet as a teaser of the new menu which was introduced a day after.
Everyone had a great night and buffet disappeared very fast!
We look forward to what future brings! less
