About us

The Black Boy Inn, set deep in the evocative Royal Borough of Caernarfon, has been a welcome retreat for weary travellers for centuries. Built circa 1522, it is one of the oldest inns in North Wales.

Formerly the 'King's Arms' and the 'Fleur de Lys', one landlord bought the other out and created the Black Boy Inn as it is today. Prior to 1828, the 'King's Arms' was known as the 'Black Boy'.

Located in Northgate Street, the Black Boy Inn is one of the few remaining free houses owned by an independent family business in the United Kingdom. It has load bearing walls of up to one and a half metres thick, and four exterior signs each showing a 'black buoy' on one side and a 'black boy' on the other.

There are at least three theories to explain the origins of its name. One relates to a black boy brought into the country on a ship, another suggests it is related to a navigational buoy which existed in the harbour in the early days of the Inn, and the third refers to the nickname given to Charles II by his mother and the fact that Royalists met here secretly at that time.

We had a lovely stay here. The room was just what we needed, the bed was very comfortable and so we had a peaceful night. We had food in the evening which was great followed by breakfast the next day. I am vegan and this can sometimes mean there's not many options but the hotel were really accommodating. The staff member on duty for breakfast was so friendly, (not sure of his name). But really appreciated it. Me and my partner had a lovely breakfast. We will definitely stay here again. Thanks to all the lovely staff!

Fantastic stay during a roadtrip through the countryside. Historic location, wonderful service, and great accommodations/food. Gets very busy very quickly, but never felt rushed to vacate table. Parking is a TIGHT fit, but very doable.

Good food. A bit of a wait as it was busy after the local marathon event. No parking nearby if limited mobility. Confused ordering system. According to the menu it was to be done either via app or at the bar. We chose the latter only to discover a waitress actually taking table orders.

Had a really good stay here. Loads of character in this lovely middle ages building. Spacious bedrooms, but mind your head! Excellent breakfast. Good food in the restaurant, good sized portions. Nice atmosphere in the bars. 2 minutes walk from the castle. Exceptional value for what we paid. Recommended!

My experience at the Black Boy Inn in Caernarfon, particularly when ordering a burger and chips through their online ordering system, was a delightful and convenient dining experience. Using their online ordering platform made the process incredibly efficient and user-friendly. It was easy to navigate, and I appreciated the convenience of browsing the menu, customizing my order, and making payment all from the comfort of my table. Now, onto the food itself - the burger and chips were a true treat for the taste buds. The burger was perfectly cooked, with a juicy patty and a generous array of toppings that added layers of flavor and texture. The chips were crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, an ideal accompaniment to the burger. It was evident that the Black Boy Inn takes pride in sourcing quality ingredients and preparing their dishes with care. The presentation of the meal was also noteworthy, with attention to detail that elevated the dining experience. The staff at the Black Boy Inn were attentive and friendly, ensuring that my dining experience was enjoyable from start to finish. Despite using the online ordering system, I felt well taken care of. The atmosphere in the inn added to the overall charm of the experience. The historic setting and cozy interior made it a perfect place to savor a delicious meal. In summary, my visit to the Black Boy Inn in Caernarfon was a wonderful dining experience. The combination of convenience, excellent food, and welcoming ambiance made it a memorable stop during my travels. If you find yourself in Caernarfon, I highly recommend giving this inn a visit for a satisfying meal.
