About us

The Hossle or village pond, situated at the bottom of the pub gardens, was the only source of clean running spring water in the area during drought. Farmers with sheep, cattle or horses would walk their animals from miles away to the spring, which is still as abundant today. It is rumoured that Oliver Cromwell and his New Model Army camped in the pub garden and hossle after sacking nearby Bolebec Castle at Whitchurch.

Why the name Black Boy? There are a number of similarly named pubs across the UK but the origins of the name is not clear cut. The most common belief is from when Charles II (1660-1685) was in exile his dark complexion earned him the nickname The Black Boy.

Building on the reputation that The Black Boy has been offering true hospitality for centuries, Paul Mitchell and his team are delighted to continue supporting the local community by providing a fantastic place to meet, relax and enjoy a drink and fantastic fresh, seasonal food.

Locally sourced food. Free range eggs. Proper ONE TIME COOKED CHIPS,(None of this three times reheated from last night rubbish) nor frozen, but thick cut proper chips. Staff friendly and chatty. Very dog friendly. Wish it was in walking distance not a 15 min drive. A very clean and cozy country pub.

What a lovely little find hidden away in picturesque Oving. Although we hadn't booked the wonderful staff did fit us in. It was snug where we were situated but we were comfortable. The views and the garden are simply beautiful and food was delicious.

We looove this pub! The drinks are so good! Please try the house gin is lovely, and please don’t miss the view outside, the sunset there on a sunny day is breathtaking. Best pub in the area. The ladies that work there are so lovely made us feel so at home. 10/10 recommend

Me and my wife stopped for a drink today for the first time and walked into the most beautiful pub and beer garden with views that we've ever seen. Joe, the new manageress, is lovely and very friendly and the menu is also great. We highly recommend a visit
