About us

The Allied Arms is a small family run pub right in the centre of Reading. We have been at the helm for the past 20 years and feel we have created a friendly and pleasant environment where our customers feel welcomed and treasured.

Our garden has seen the most changes over the years and is now one of the best, if not THE best, outdoor space in the centre of town. We have created a superb oasis in which to relax at any time of day. We have plenty of seating and heating so there will undoubtedly be room for you when you visit.

We have a varied selection of cask ales available along with popular lagers and an amazing wine list exclusive to The Allied Arms. If we don't like it, we don't stock it! In addition, we stock a good range of single malts, gins and rums for the discerning customer.

Our efforts seem to be paying off too with the pub recently being shortlisted as a finalist for Stonegate's Pub of the Year at the Great British Pub Awards! You can also find us the Bar10 brochure and the CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2024, which pick out the best drinking spots across the UK . Join us for a pint and see for yourselves.

Great pub. Good beer and service. Grab a baguette in Pierre's next door if you want something to eat in the pub!

Unfortunately we will not be returning to The Allied Arms which is a huge shame as we live in Reading and are frequent pub-goers. Although the pub itself is charming, I cannot say the same about the bar staff, particularly the young waitress / barmaid who was very cold, volatile and quite obviously had somewhere else to be on a Friday night. She seemed to be the one in charge that day. Last orders were called at 11 yet we were served after this (which is typically no issue if the staff give you the full 20 minutes after you’ve been served to finish a pint as is standard practice) yet we were strong armed to leave at 11.15 despite showing proof of being served later. Given this is an expensive pub (6.50 -8 pounds a pint) we were shocked at how we were being treated. Trying to cooperate, we asked for plastics and we were told they had none, followed by a firm request to pack up and leave immediately (10 minutes after being served a full pint each). No empathy, just cold and borderline aggressive dialogue from the manager. I’d like to point out that at 11.10 the garden door was intentionally left open, letting in ice cold air, to force customers out (it was a full house), which is completely out of order after an ‘11pm final orders’ and quite frankly cruel when it’s -1 outside. This truly exposed the inexperience of bar staff on site. If the team are aiming for a prompt close at 11, last orders should be called at 10.40 or earlier, not at 11. My husband and I have held many bar, waitressing and bar management positions, and we have never seen such unnecessary, cruel and tyrannical treatment as we received last Friday. A note to the owner: We aren’t here to tell the you how to run your business, but we would seriously implore you to reconsider who you have representing you front of house and the irreversible damage done weekly, especially to your locals.

Never been in here. So popped in on my own. It's what I expected from a traditional older style pub, takes me back to my time in the Army 🇬🇧 and the type of pubs that were around and nice to see a no nonsense pub trying to be something it's not. Don't get me wrong, nothing wrong about the place, but I wouldn't take my wife. Old style wall mounted mechanical juke box which I liked. Sort of pub I'd expect to see a dartboard 😂. Nice little outdoor courtyard out back. £6.60 for a Heineken with a lemonade top seemed a bit steep, but I do get the struggles that pubs like this must be going through. Barmaid was pleasant enough.

14/10/23 Been before when coming to reading as has a nice garden at rear. Unfortunately I ordered pint of beer £5.20 not a bad price but soda and hint of lime £5 yes £5 never have I been charged that amount for soda and lime. Went to pub opposite for soda and lime and it was nearly half price and went to spoons and its 75p for a pint. What an absolute rip off for the non drinkers. Will not come back to get ripped off again.

(Visited 2022-03-19) We popped in for a quick pre-lunch pint (and a quick post-lunch pint afterwards) and found it to be a nice, bright pub. The garden is great when the weather is good. Definitely worth visiting again. Marked down a star because at the time of visit, the Gents was the smelliest place on Earth. Hopefully, that's been resolved by now!
