Traditional riverside pub open after a recent refurbishment. Fresh seasonal food, ask ales, world wines.
Refurbished to a stunning standard in 2015, The Lock, Stock & Barrel sees traditional charm meet modern comfort on the banks of the River Kennet. It’s long been regarded one of the best pubs in Newbury for fresh food and cracking cask ales - and it just got even better….
We have visited the Lock Stock a few times, it is a lovely pub, very cosy and with friendly staff. However something was a little wrong this time - the menu was a lot more limited than previous visits, hardly any starters, no Sunday lunch, with many items on the menu not available (we have visited at the same weekend other years, so I can't see why the lantern parade would have impacted this year more than others). the food we had was lovely however. The biggest disappointment was when we went to order dessert - a few minutes later, after I had paid for our order, someone came over to let us know that the kitchen closed at 5pm! How did none of the bar staff know this, why were there menus still on the table, and how was it possible to book a table for food if you weren't actually serving (I have since spotted that the food service time is on their website, which makes it even stranger that the staff weren't aware of this when they took my order). It was very fortunate that we turned up earlier than our booked time, otherwise we might not have been able to get anything at all. We were also left sitting in near darkness in the conservatory area, the only lights being a string of fairy lights - not sure why we were allocated that table to dine when there were others available. It was lovely when we arrived and we foolishly expected some more lights would come on once it got dark. With so many good pubs in the Newbury area, I have to admit that these little issues combined would make think twice about picking this one next time, as something seems to have declined in the service.
Granted there were only two members of staff at the bar. I was left for a while before I was seen and then when I was told to just pick any table. No staff told me the procedures to order my food until it was 10 minutes before the kitchen closed. I also wasn't given a menu until I was told about the kitchen closing. Other than that the food was very good and decently priced (for the area).
Nice little country pub that was well maintained on the river, which is a nice setting. The service was friendly and the menu was nice. The whiting was fresh and crispy, and the scotch egg was warm fluffy. I couldn't fault the pub. Wanted to treat my partner for his birthday and went and ordered the burgers. This is what we got for 16.50. Weatherspoons do bigger and better portions for less. Like to know what their excuse for the poor show is
Steak was pretty much the best I’ve had in the UK so far (including proper silverware that allow you to cut into meat without a struggle), cooked exactly as a rare steak should be however I would have enjoyed it much more if the kids noise would have been reduced and the background music increased (obviously a parent problem there). Waited for more than 40 minutes for two dishes to come out knowing that the table was to be free within an hour and a half from arrival. Dog friendly pub with nice seating view outdoors towards the canal.
