About us

This beautiful 400 year old beamed tavern, with its cosy bar and glowing fires serves traditional heart warming bar food such as; 12 hour slow roasted shoulder of lamb; and Pan seared calves liver with classic bubble & squeak, crispy bacon & red wine jus. Good ‘old fashioned’ indulgence is the order of the day in the restaurant, where you’ll find classic English fayre and daily fresh fish specials on the a la carte menu.

“The Thatch”, as it is endearingly known is steeped in local history. Even in the 1700 ‘s it was a well known landmark – and it is said that Queen Victoria’s Royal Carriage was sometimes seen outside, while John Brown was fortifying himself inside before his onward journey to Windsor Castle!.

A friend booked this pub for a Sunday meet up of three families and we were allocated the private dining area which was bright and spacious. The food was tasty and well presented. The service was very friendly and efficient even though the pub was super busy. Car parking spaces are limited, but you can park along the road so not a problem.

Nestled in the heart of Ascot, The Thatched Tavern is a hidden gem that effortlessly marries history, charm, and culinary excellence. As a Texan revisiting after 25 years away, my recent experience at this 400-year-old pub left an indelible mark, making it a sentimental return to one of my family’s favorite haunts when we lived in England in the 1990’s. The experience was every bit as good as I recall. The Thatched Tavern's ambiance is nothing short of enchanting. Stepping inside is like going back in time, with its low ceilings, ancient rafters, and a cozy warmth that immediately envelops you. The historic charm is palpable, transporting hungry patrons to a bygone era, and the careful preservation of the pub's original architecture adds to the allure. It's a place where you can almost hear the echoes of conversations from centuries past while relishing the exquisite flavors of the present. The friendliness and genuine warmth of the staff was impressive. Despite being thousands of miles from home, the team at The Thatched Tavern made me feel like a cherished guest. Their attention to detail and dedication to ensuring a delightful experience made the perfect evening as I reminisced about prior visits to the tavern with my parents. I could feel the spirit and presence of my mother, who is no longer with us, as I dined once again at a place that was a treasure to her. The menu at The Thatched Tavern is a delightful blend of tradition and refinement. The menu’s offerings are a testament to the chef's skill and commitment to quality. Each dish is a carefully crafted masterpiece, showcasing a diverse range of flavors while remaining true to the pub's British roots. From hearty pub classics to more sophisticated options, every item on the menu is a culinary delight. A word of caution to taller patrons: the low ceilings and ancient rafters add to the authenticity of the experience, but do mind your head! It's a small price to pay for the privilege of immersing yourself in the rich history. And thank you again for sending me away with my own commemorative Thatched Tavern pint glass. I promise to put it to good use!

You have to visit. No words can adequately describe this place. We both had a beer and the calves liver which was cooked to perfection (pink). I could have eaten from the whole menu, but hey, it was only lunch. Service was superb. The venue is an ancient site, apparently a building has occupied the site since 1480. Fire in the hearth, great bar. Selection of wines, beers etc are enticing. You really do have to visit from wherever you are!

Popped in for lunch after a business meeting. We had a great meal and the service was also great. I have calves liver which was very tasty and very nice sized portion.

Took a chance and popped in on a Sunday hoping to have some lunch. Really happy we stumbled across this lovely pub. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly, managed to find us a table on a busy afternoon and the roast beef lunch was delicious. Will definately be back.
