About us

The club was formed in 1946 by a group of local businessmen and was originally housed in a nissen hut in Old Didcot. After a short while, members bought from Mr. F. W. Napper, a local farmer, an old barn that was in a very poor state of disrepair. It was part of an aged working farm. This is a rear view of the barn, which now forms the Main Hall or Function Room of the present club-house.

The new members set about transforming this into the present clubhouse and by 1951 we had a building of which we can be proud. Even today in modern Didcot, our clubhouse stands out as a place of character and a venue for many and varied functions.

At our opening day, we were honoured to have our local M.P., Mr. Airey Neave, attend with the builder of the new club, Mr. Cecil Fosterkew. Various alterations were made to the club in 1955, including a snooker room and games room and, in 1962, the main hall was extended to accommodate functions. Now it is used for dancing, race nights, short mat bowls and skittles. A new committee room and small meeting room were also added. In 1990, the main building roof was replaced at a cost of approximately £40,000 and a security entry system introduced.

The Barn is an ideal place to have a family party as it is spacious, bright & airy. It instantly offers a friendly atmosphere supported by lovely cordial staff. The staff is super friendly, attentive, efficient and very polite. Served delicious food & drinks add more value to the visitors. It is a meticulously run family business, I consider it is one of the best in Oxfordshire. I highly recommend The Barn encompassing a richly deserved 5 star rating. Best of luck to Mark & Trish G.

The food was amazing last night. I had what I imagine to be triple cooked chips, eggs from a farm I reckon because of the beautiful taste and a top quality sausage to boot. The food was cooked to a high standard with a polite lady serving it. All this in an immaculate barn. Brilliant 👏 👏 👏

We loved holding our wedding at The Barn and have some constructive feedback in general. The Barn could offer exactly what I wanted which is why I had chosen the location after much stress and worry at other venues we looked at. The food was really amazing, the afternoon tea we chose to have as our main meal was really lovely, everything was as I expected, and everyone has commented that this was a great idea. The fish and chips in the evening were amazing, and everyone has raved about how good this was and it was such a great idea to bring out this in trays as everyone helped themselves and it just worked really well. The décor and overall feel of the barn was amazing, there is nothing negative to say about that at all. I was pleased with my choices and how they were executed. Some unfortunate things that I feel need feedback on are: Staffing – it was made aware to us (the customer) that there was a shortage of staff, this is not something we needed to be made aware of on our wedding day. It should have been kept under the radar as I am understanding things happen and sickness etc. cannot be prevented. This should not have affected the overall experience which I do feel like it did in some ways. This included the toast drink which needed to be handed to tables and we had to get family members to do this as asking guests to get their own wasn’t going to work. The sweet cart was not being topped which meant we had to do ourselves which is not something I would expect to do. Again I assume this was down to the staffing. The welcome drink could have been left as open bottles (say 10/12 at a time to ease this pressure also). Tidying up – it felt like there was a rush to tidy up / move things out of the way which I understand things need to be moved on but it could have been done at a different time or in a different way, I guess this points back to my first point in regards to staff that if there was more staff this could have been done in a more sensitive way. I think also for a wedding that some of the clothing choices by some staff could have been a little smarter.

We held our wedding day at the Barn and could not have been happier with the service provided. The venue is lovely and intimate and exactly what we wanted for our wedding. Trish was extremely helpful and helped to plan our day exactly how we wanted it. She was always on hand by email, over the phone and in person when we had things we wanted to discuss. She also did an absolutely amazing job of decorating the venue on the day. It was far more lovely than we ever could have imagined. Service was very quick and efficient with both meals and at the bar and everybody said how lovely the food was. Trish and the team were very accommodating, answered any questions we had and were very helpful in setting up some additional entertainment we had provided for the day. Would highly recommend.
