About us

The Barley Mow pub shows off a host of original features including low beams and an old fireplace so large it fits across two different parts of the pub. It is an ideal setting for couples longing for a relaxing meal by candlelight. With the River Thames just minutes away, the Barley Mow is an ideal place to stop and relax if you are enjoying a stroll, bike ride or boat trip along the river. Our superb menu offers traditional pub food and seasonal dishes that cater for the whole family. The Barley Mow is a storybook pub nestled in the picturesque little village and civil parish of Clifton Hampden, just over 3 miles east of Abingdon, Oxfordshire. Originally a farming community, the area rests peacefully on the north bank of the River Thames. The river’s pathway is filled with 17th century thatched cottages and the sweet scent of honeysuckle. Famous English writer, Jerome K. Jerome, depicted this part of the River Thames area beautifully in his classic 1889 book Three Men in a Boat as “the wonderfully pretty village, old fashioned, peaceful and dainty with flowers.” In Anglo Saxon times Clifton Hampden was known as ‘tun on a cliff’ (town on a cliff), a name allegedly given because of the rock face that stands above the rest of the village. Perched on the top of this cliff, just 5 minutes from the Barley Mow pub, is the historic Church of St Michael & All Angels, a chapel of the Dorchester parish until the 19th century.

After many lovely meals here, today I left very disappointed. Apparently left booking too late for festive food. Booked online and nothing indicated this. Tried to ring could only get through to an annoying automated answering service. Began ordering from the main menu. Sons vegetarian choice for main was unavailable. So he ended up having a very similar starter and main! Waitress asked if my vegetarian son ate fish! Finished main and decided to have pudding. Again not available. Paid the bill and left. Very disappointing indeed. The food itself was nice and good size portions and the pub is lovely.

A wonderful family and pet friendly pub. Fairly priced and excellent food - the wonderful staff even found some leftovers for our pooch who thought all his Christmas' had come at once!! Thank you for a lovely afternoon and thank you to Sue from our dog - he wants to be your best fried now!

Service was okay although a little rude at times. It restaurant was clean and easy to book / be seated. They got an order for one of the meals wrong & then took ages to bring out the food when it did come out after everyone else had finished eating the food was still wrong. The chips were nice but the rest of the food was overcooked, oily or flavourless. I wouldn’t go back.

Just visited this restaurant for the first time, and wow, what a pleasant surprise! I've driven past it countless times without giving it a second thought. Today, I finally decided to give it a try, and I'm so glad I did. The dishes I ordered were absolutely fantastic! Finding a free parking spot right across from the restaurant was a bonus. We started off with refreshing drinks—the Elderflower no-jito and the Passion fruit & orange sparkler. For starters, we indulged in creamy garlic mushrooms, Korean BBQ chicken strips, and a delightful roasted butternut squash and sweet potato soup. Our main course was the Salmon Forentine, and we couldn't resist ending our meal with a heavenly cheesecake. Honestly, I was blown away by the food. We never expected it to be this good! The Korean BBQ chicken was incredibly crispy and delicious. Major kudos to the chef! As we savored our meal, we couldn't help but plan our next visit to try other enticing dishes. The staff was friendly and attentive, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. I'm already looking forward to my next visit! 🚗 Free Parking

Lovely meal here with the family as a party of 10. Everyone enjoyed their food and we had a wide range between us. The fig and goats cheese tart I had to start was delicious and clearly well thought out. Couldn't improve on it. The ravioli part of my main was very tasty, but the golden beetroot accompaniment to the ravioli didn't work for me. There was too much of it alongside the ravioli and it was very hard. I found it unpalatable, and I love beetroot. My partner had the three meat roast, which came suspiciously drowning in gravy. Much better to serve the gravy on the side and let people choose how much they have.
