About us

The ancient inn has origins which date back to the 15th century, forming the basis of hundreds of years of delicious dining and drinking history.

In recent years it has held the reputation of being the destination establishment, in one of the most exquisite corners of the North Yorkshire Dales. Famous for its food as well as its warm, welcoming atmosphere – it has maintained a strong following among locals as well as with customers from all over the world.

The Angel’s fortunes took an exciting turn in September 2018 with the arrival of a new management team. At the helm is chef patron Michael Wignall. Michael and his wife Johanna have a vision to keep everything that the Angel was famous for; fantastic food, a warm welcome and a deep connection with the dramatic Yorkshire landscape – and make it outstanding.

Two Michelin-starred chef Michael Wignall has reimagined the pub’s offering and created a fabulous new menu. Future plans are to bring a brand-new fine dining restaurant, “Cove” to the mix, putting the Angel on every gourmet food lovers bucket list.

With a style that’s casual and contemporary, the new Angel is all about great food and great hospitality – and it aims to give people a relaxed experience no matter who they are or where they choose to dine, Angel or Cove.

Michael Wignall delivers food that wows on every plate. His ever-evolving style creates unique dishes full of flavour, underpinned by a contemporary, less formal approach to fine cuisine. Describing his food as ‘modern, technical and meaningful’, each element brings flavour or texture, enticing diners to experience new combinations and ingredients.

In October 2019, just 12 months after taking over, Michael Wignall and his team were awarded a Michelin star in the Michelin UK & Ireland Guide 2020. The Michelin star comes hot on the heels of the AA Hospitality Awards and saw the Angel receive four coveted rosettes for Michael’s cooking. The AA awards four rosettes to restaurants that “exhibit intense ambition, a passion for excellence, superb technical skills, and remarkable consistency” – something that Michael and the team, both front and back of house, strive for every day.

What ever

Just had a meal here this afternoon and it was the best dining experience we've had yet. The decor inside is modern whilst being inviting and relaxing. The staff can't do enough for you and have precise timing, giving you enough time to enjoy the experience and not feel rushed. The food was on another level and we got surprise courses to say we had al a carte. It's amazing the amount of complex flavours there were in every bite of every dish! Next time we're doing the tasting menu! Thanks for a great experience.

Worst booking experience ever. I wanted to book 4 rooms for two nights 28th/29th June . When booking I was told we had to have the £165 tasting menu and could not choose A la carte (£110). I said we wanted a la carte but this was refused because the kitchen could not cope with orders for 8 for a la carte. I asked again and was told the restaurant manager would ring me to see if they could make an exception. An hour later the receptionist called back and said yes they could do a la carte but the only time a table was available was at 6.30pm. This was a booking 5 months in advance. So it is clear that the Angel only operates for the benefit of its kitchen convenience and the more you want to spend the more inflexible is the attitude shown to paying customers. I emailed the owner but received no reply. If he responds to this review please don't give me a vacuous apology.

We were fortunate to get a room and dining experience at the Angel at Hetton for New Years Eve. The accommodation was first rate, with no expense spared on the furnishings, their fit and facilities. We stayed in the main restaurant building, which was ideal, giving us easy access for our evening meal which was the tasting menu. As we had been to the restaurant before, we were aware of the service standards and quality of the food and dining experience, all of which are not deteriorating over time, in fact they are improving. The staff were familiar faces from our previous visits, giving confidence to the guests dining that the staff were spot on with their work and communication. No disappointments here, nothing is too much trouble for the staff. The food is exquisite, with taste sensations coming to you on each course, amazing food and you can understand why Michael and team have a Michelin star, although why it's not 2 stars is a conundrum. At the end of the evening service, having retired to the bar for the customary NYE celebrations, to see Michael and his team all gather round at midnight was a testimony to their team spirit, it was lovely to see. Having had a great nights sleep, the breakfast tasting menu didn't disappoint either, with the service and food top notch. Overall, not disappointed and pleased that even though we didn't think it possible, Michael and team are continuing to improve and innovate, well done!

One of the best meals I have ever had. Impeccable service, wonderful interior design, course after course of exquisitely crafted dishes. A real joy. I will come back for breakfast some day!

Tried the chefs choice sitting. Every course was very good. Service was exquisite and cannot rave about them enough. Atmosphere was simple and well done. We had a great relaxing evening, with an amazing variety of food with amazing servers.
