About us

One of our three Traditional Inns in the East of England, the Ancient Mariner Inn at Old Hunstanton takes great pride in offering real ales and real food in a real pub environment.

Working alongside the neighbouring Four Star Le Strange Arms Hotel and the Boat House self catering apartments means that we offer something completely different to all our customers. Whether it’s a cosy meal for two or a lively family celebration; an art masterclass or bird watching at the local reserves, you are sure to find the perfect spot at the Ancient Mariner Inn.

The buildings were originally constructed as barns and stabling for a traditional Norfolk farmhouse built in the 1600s, now the site of the Le Strange Arms Hotel.

During the 1800s Hunstanton was transformed from sleepy coastal town to bustling seaside resort – popular with families – thanks to the work of local architect Henry L’Estrange and of course the arrival of the railways. The hotel had been completed just in time to take advantage of this and the pub was converted sometime after.

Reflecting the Ancient Mariner Inn’s nautical connections, the walls and beams are adorned with local memorabilia and some interesting prints.

Went for a lunch after a walk on the beach. The staff were very helpful and welcoming to both us and our dog who was with us. The food was very good and I can recommend the Steak and Ale pie 🥧. The open fire was lovely and very relaxing. We will return.

We visited this pub on a trip to Norfolk. Whilst the outside of the pub looks lovely and the staff friendly, I would not recommend. The food was basic, we both had sandwiches and some soggy salad (the type you find at the end of the salad bag, wet and shrivelled - poor effort from the chef). The staff were nice but one of the managers was wondering around handing out dog treats rather than helping on the bar or clearing the mountain of dirty tables. It was so disappointing and I would recommend eating literally anywhere else.

An absolutely fantastic place right next to the beach. I ordered the chilli con carne, and my friend ordered the chicken salad with prawn crackers (both pictured). The food came quickly, and it was delicious. The only thing to note is that the prices can fetch between £10 and £20 per meal, and you have to get your own cutlery, but other than that, it is absolutely amazing, and a place that you cannot miss!

Young girl Jamie who served us was very knowledgable and she knew her job very polite and what ever we wanted it was no hassle for her the food was good and enjoyed it new potatoes in my opinion where a bit bland needed seasoning the steak in my opinion should of been trimmed off the fat/gristle before being sent out also 2 ceiling lights not working but apart from those few things the waitress was very good and helpful would recommend coming here again for food

We came here for some lunch as it was one of the higher rated pubs in the area and seemed like a nice place but it was quite a rubbish experience in the end. The service was awful - a girl on the bar was one of the rudest and worst customer experiences ive ever had. She was genuinely not bothered and clearly had no interest in serving customers. We ordered a couple of pints and some water to which she rolled her eyes and huffed, she didn't give a reply and in the end she couldn't be bothered to get us water so just didn't, even though we asked her twice, she just ignored us so we gave up. It wasn't busy so it was just super awkward, bar staff seemed more interested in talking to each other (some of the other staff in the restaurant area were nicer and friendlier so could've just been the one bad apple) The toilets were terrible, messy and none of the taps worked. The food is overpriced £14-16 for very standard pub food. There's plenty of seating in the place - indoor and out, but seemed pretty quiet not much atmosphere but the outdoor seating does have views of the sea. Few ales on tap which were alright but overall the pub isn't anything special. We left and went to a cafe a short walk away on the beach which was far far nicer. In short, I wouldn't recommend this pub at all.
