About us

The Anchor Inn is situated alongside the River Wye, with the stunning backdrop of Tintern Abbey. This historic inn, set in extensive grounds, dates back to the twelfth century and was originally a cider mill and grain store for the abbey itself.

Additions to these two buildings were constructed in the 19th century to house the kitchen, a function room was added in the 1950’s and the garden room has been recently completed to improve the facilities available to visitors.

Our menus offer a cuisine of excellent local produce along with a range of locally brewed ales, beers and ciders. We welcome children who have their own play area in a section of our beautiful garden. Walkers and their dogs are also welcome.

There is complimentary WiFi for those who want to browse the internet over their morning coffee or hold an informal business meeting in the bar or garden room.

The Anchor’s extensive grounds include our own sports field and they lend themselves to a variety of uses. Football and cricket is played regularly and we support both the local Tintern clubs as well as playing host to a number of outside events during the summer.

The Anchor is featured in the 2018 Good Pub Guide.

Fantastic Christmas lunch here. We love this pub, and Christmas Day didn't disappoint. They managed the numbers, and so service was quick and efficient. The staff were so friendly, helpful, and welcoming. The atmosphere was jolly but not overly loud. The food, as always, was excellent. We had a wonderful time and am looking forward to going back for my January birthday celebrations! Highly recommended.

Very busy and therefore slow on a Sunday with a very nice looking roast offering plus their usual menu. Nice spot. If you paid £5 to park all day in the nearby car park they will refund it against purchases on presentation of your parking stub.

Found this place by chance. What a great pub food was outstanding lasagna was perfect and not swimming in oil. My husband had the steak pie which was homemade and he said the flavours were delicious. Next time we are in the area we will definitely be back.

This place is situated in the shadows of Tintern Abbey itself, right on the Rive Wye. The Anchor inn looked to be one of the nicer pub restaurants in the area with loads of outdoor seating, plenty of play area for kids, including a climbing frame and green, and an appealing rustic look. The inside of the pub was decorated nicely and had lots of memorabilia relating to the mill nearby and the areas history. The seating wasn't crammed in either like some pubs and plenty of room was available making it easily accessible for wheelchair users. It is also dog friendly. ( kids are tolerated. Only joking. Kids are very welcome) We decided on our choice of food, and we're promptly told our choices were out of stock. Surprising really as we prebooked for 7:30pm, ( not late by any stretch of the imagination) and would have expected better to be frank. When the food did turn up, ( 15 mins wait time) it was not as ordered, not really that hot, and one of the dishes was almost tasteless. Pretty poor show if I'm honest. Overall, very underwhelming and definitely not somewhere I would choose to visit again. Sad really as it really is in a nice place and could do so much better.
