This used to be our local pub when we lived in Little Oakley. A proper traditional pub. No fake repro stuff here. Now we live in Spain and visited while back to visit family and can't believe how expensive food and drink is in the UK. The Alma is no exception. Food is very good. At the time we visited I think there were several new staff which caused wrong orders. It actually seemed too busy to cope, but that's not their fault. Steps away from the waterfront it is still a local gem.
Fantastic, Friendly, Five Star Loveliness. Just celebrated our wedding anniversary at the lovely Alma, friendly staff, scrumptious food, great range of beers. Brilliant hospitality at a very reasonable price. (Sign up for the deals) I stupidly left my iPad in the room and they made contact within minutes to alert me. Thanks to all the staff for helping to make it memorable!
The only time I’ve eaten lobster & not enjoyed it! Very tough & had a faint strange smell. I also think the grilled oysters were significantly undercooked. I don’t mind raw oysters so wasn’t enough of an issues to complain at the time, but others may be best to avoid. Dining ultimately made even worse by local constantly vaping at the bar! The bar staff did eventually get him stop, but it was clear from the way they rolled their eyes when asking him they thought I was being unreasonable. So disappointing, especially given the high price.
We are regular customers but have just organised a seasonal party for twelve staying overnight with dinner, drinks and breakfast. The Alma scored full marks yet again for the outstanding food, warm welcome, great rooms and excellent value for money. We love the place which is a proper English seaside port pub with a regular and loyal clientele, old world atmosphere and superb service.
Service very friendly but very very slow - we gave up ordering desserts and went elsewhere. Food was better in the past - maybe they’ve cut back with the cost of living or changed chef. Food used to be delicious, now just average. It won awards in the past, but it’s telling no awards this year. Hope it gets back to its best soon - was a lovely pub with a great atmosphere and history. Best pub in Harwich anyway.
