About us

The Albatros is a former Dutch cargo ship built in 1899 as a North Sea clipper. She is one of the oldest sailing ships still afloat. Instead of sailing the high seas the Albatros is now permanently moored alongside the Quay of Wells-next-the-sea, Norfolk and used as a bar, restaurant, music venue and B&B.

Whether you hop on board for a drink, a pancake, a 3-course dinner or a full over night stay The Albatros is a great place to experience something a bit different.

Captain Ton Brouwer runs a relaxed ship and dishes up authentic Dutch pancakes and other Dutch specialities , served with real ales from Woodforde’s Brewery in Woodbastwick. Since 2010 we have been listed in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.

Guests can eat either alfresco on deck and enjoy stunning views of the marshes and harbour or sit below decks in our cosy bar and restaurant in the former cargo hold.albatros_bar

Every Friday and Saturday night and Sunday afternoon you can listen to great live music. And if you want to celebrate your birthday, wedding reception or anniversary on board the Albatros call Captain Ton, he knows how to party and is happy to organise the right things for you.

Throughout the year the ship hosts a range of public events like Pirate Parties, Halloween, New Years Eve, Beer Festival, and a Bob Dylan Weekend.

The accommodation for guests is in the former crew cabins with comfortable bunks and beds. Children and dogs are welcome on board.

Such a cool place to eat pancakes on the river! We watched the boats sail in on the deck, while eating delicious pancakes. We then went below deck to have apple cake and tea which was also delicious and were treated to live music on a Sunday. The toilets could be improved as it was odd to see washing up being done in the sink I wash my hands in....

Very unique and quirky bar/restaurant. To get inside you have to climb down some stairs backwards which the toddler loved (he was a pirate for the 45 minutes we were aboard. Drink prices average and while we didn't eat, the food coming out looked delicious. Service was slow but considering the environment understandable. I would return to eat but it's worth booking in advance.

Lovely place to have a drink and soak up the view - the Wherry comes straight from the cask and is absolutely delicious. Reasonably priced too. Have not eaten there but the food is Dutch, so lots of sweet and savoury pancakes to choose from. There is seating below deck (with steep stairs to go down) but it's well worth sitting up on the deck for the view. Just remember you are sitting underneath where the birds are perched!

It was really lovely. I definitely recommend the coffee with amaretto. I had the mini pancakes with apple, cinnamon, sirop and whipped cream. The apples are stewed/poached and it was absolutely lovely on the deck with my husband who had the Belgian waffle. It would have been nice to have table service, where someone takes orders at tables and be shown to a table but it was a midweek afternoon.

Wonderfully cozy and atmospheric bar below deck, friendly service. We went in just for pancakes. A steady stream of food coming out of the kitchen so we had a little wait, but the pancakes were lovely (though I felt they could have been served a little hotter).
