The name of this pub recalls the royal charter granted to Hull Corporation, in 1447, to elect a suitable and discreet man as Admiral of the Humber. The city’s Lord Mayor is still elected to that office, although its power no longer exists. This site is part of Grosvenor House which, itself, was built on the site of the Master Mariner Almshouse, erected in 1834. It was known to the inmates as The Ship, from the carving of a ship’s hull on top of this grand building. In 1937, there were 48 inmates. Four years later, the almshouse was destroyed by enemy action, with the site cleared in the 1950s.
Beautiful place. Friendly staff. Patrons were rude to the staff (drunk) and the new fella behind the bar took it in stride. Will still go back for the fair prices and good selection.
Usual 'Spoons, very busy but to be fair, the staff are great and work hard. You're not waiting long whether you're waiting at the bar or order to your table via the App. In the Summer we sat out up on the roof terrace, cracking atmosphereand a bit of a sun trap. Been loads of times now and will continue with many more visits......
This is a typical Wetherspoons pub with classic pub grub and a wide range of reasonably priced drinks. After ordering at the bar our food was served at our table quite quickly. We both chose the fish and chips with mushy peas. The price included an alcoholic drink, we chose Shipyard Pale Ale and a pint of Strongbow cider. Everything was delicious and extremely good value.
Great place to meet and eat during the day and evening. Large open area with plenty of seating. Decent prices for food. The only letdown for me is a little background music. It would be nice in the evenings.
Lovely spoons in the centre of Town, only a 5 minute walk from station. The prices are great as always, quick service, and the place is always clean. Good atmosphere and feels cosy. Large bathrooms, so you never have to queue for the loo. Never stayed in any of the hotel rooms but the reviews seem to be good for those too!
