A great family local community pub with warmth and character family run great beers food and sports including pool darts table skittles sports channels
The Railway Hotel was erected between 1871 and 1881, alongside a terrace of railway workers cottages which together with the pub now constitute The Midland Cottages Conservation Area. The former Wigston Magna railway station (Midland Railway) across the road closed in 1968. In the 1920s this establishment ceased to be a hotel and became a public house and eventually Shipstone's Brewery became the owners. When Greenalls bought them out in 1980, they renamed the pub The 1852 Brewery Company in deference to the date Shipstone's Brewery first opened. Unusually these days, the 1852 relies solely on wet trade apart from very reasonably priced filled cobs. It mainly consists of a large public bar, on several levels, with a pool room annex to the rear which has one wall completely clad with wooden Shipstone’s beer crates. Out the back is an enclosed garden with picnic tables and two timber summer houses.
It is a bit run down inside. Other than that it's a run of the mill boozer. I think they are spending some money doing some renovation. It would be good to see if once done.
A great Sunday lunch. Don't go XL unless you can eat for 4.. it's massive. Support your local boozer before they're all gone.
Very surprised given I've seen rave reviews on FB lately on apparent recent changes. Actually the place was exactly the same as it was the last time I visited well over 5 years ago.
Food was spot on, busy and still really hot. Value for money is amazing and good food. Family pub and great for families. Book for sure you won’t be disappointed. Thank you
Wow. What change to this pub. New management has brought a old pub to life. New menus and fantastic new garden area which was completed during lockdown. Live acoustic bands on certain evenings. Food is fantastic and all freshly cooked. Credit where credit is due. Please check this place out if you get a chance. A very underrated pub in my opinion. With the potential to be a "go to" place if you give it a chance. Family friendly and well set out for social distancing with hand sanitiser throughout.
