About us

Situated in the rural, picturesque village of Milfield, The Red Lion Inn is a classic stone building dating back to the mid 1700’s.

Originally frequented by the Sheep Drovers of the northern counties and became a major resting point for the Mail Stage Coach carrying passengers and mail between Edinburgh and London.

We’re located on the edge of Northumberland National Park, with the Cheviot Hills in walking distance; making us the perfect place to visit before exploring the area.

This is a new pub we've found. We have a place we go to in Wooler, from time to time, and this is a great find. The steak pies are delish!

After ringing at quite late notice for a table for lunch on New Year's Day we visited the Red Lion having never been to Millfield so we didn't know anything about the pub. I'm so very glad that we did. We've rarely been made to feel so welcome anywhere. There's a good selection of local beers and it was clear the staff knows about each one. Everyone we spoke to was so warm and friendly, and they were obviously proud of the lovely old pub which is in the heart of the village. The village itself is in the most beautiful and timeless place. We both had the steak pie and chips which are made in the pub and they were possibly the best pies we've ever eaten. Big chunks of meat, proper suet pastry, chips, peas and gravy. Out girls had breaded fish off the children's menu and when it came it was a big piece of really fresh fish fried in panko breadcrumbs, it was devine. Our desserts were gorgeous too, a mint Aero cheese cake with loads of chocolate chunks, and a sticky toffee pudding with local Doddington ice cream. Proper pub food made really well and served by people who care. It was just the nicest and most comfortable experience we've had in a very long time. We wanted to stay, we'll definitely come back.

Excellent pub for Sunday roasts and good food in general. Pleasant old fashioned building with friendly staff and well stocked bar. Couldn’t ask for more.

We had a lovely meal here, 2 very hungry children needed feeding! Service was excellent, from the moment we arrived we felt very welcome and well looked after. The beers were great and we all enjoyed our meals, the steak pie was very good.

Rooms are simple but nicely furnished. Plenty of choice on the dinner menu and staff were happy to provide recommendations when asked. Always a pleasant surprise to find homemade desserts as so many are bought in. I was also leaving before breakfast so was provided with a lovely packed lunch to take away instead. Sophie and Chris were lovely hosts and I wouldn't hesitate to return.
