Great basement bar in Newington
The entrance to Camera is low key: a fire door with a small buzzer to the side. On pushing the button we're greeted with a smile and motioned toward the metal clad steps to the basement. Clanging downstairs we descend into the candlelit cellar space beneath street level and walk into the room. It's small, but cozy, not cramped, and the bar in the corner glints with interesting bottles with handwritten labels. We order drinks; market specials, available this week only; they're delicious. The "smoky berries" is a fruity riff on an espresso martini - dark, warming, complex mix of coffee and aelder liqueur - balances the bitterness and fruityness, it's what I want my morning espresso to be like from now on. Drink two - "orange" - is a citrus blend with amaro and fernet, it's fresh, no cloying sweetness, but it doesn't overdo the bitterness either - almost dangerously drinkable. At this point we wrap up - it's a school night after all - but I already know I'm going to back to try the rest of the menu as soon as possible - this place is good.
