About us

The Malt Shovel pub restaurant is a beautiful 19th century listed building, which used to welcome guests working and travelling on the country's waterways. Now our canal side location provides an ideal place to relax and unwind in a town famous for its former resident, George Orwell, whilst enjoying our Real Ale.

A country pub oozing rural charm and rustic character, our picturesque surroundings provide the perfect backdrop for savouring the hearty, seasonal pub-food on our menu, and the carefully nurtured cask ales and fine wines gracing our bar.

Whether you are planning dinner with friends or Sunday lunch with family, book a table online and enjoy some quality time with those you love the most.

Visiting the area and this pub TWICE! Our server, Reece was a wonderful ambassador for the Malt Shovel and the area. Kudos to Amy too, who put me on to cars 24/7! The pub is warm friendly and we’ll be back!

Stopped here twice Saturday on our canal walk for early coffee & evening wine. Coffee was nice, proper espresso machine. Very good wine list and fairly priced. Nice atmosphere inside. Didn't have food but the menu looks okay. Dogs welcome. It was a bit cold inside (had to keep my jumper on) heating needed turning up. Toilets need attention.

Nice chilled pub next to the canal, staff do well considering they are all very young! Had a load of starters delivered to a bar side table and was very happy. Been back several times since for drinks. Think they used to have a fire which was nice but couldn’t see it now Nice for a quiet drink

We came specifically for a roast dinner we both had beef. We ordered at the bar not table service - not sure if this was normal. We were told due to staff shortages there would be delay but actually came within 15 min so no issue. There was signs that due to shortages they hadn’t opened for brunch that day. We came 12:30 no reservation and place was deserted so no issue without reservation for us. Overall food was good, portion size was good variety and flavour good. Everything was just fine however not excellent not amazing. Food was warm, potatoes needed to be crispier (for us) was nice to have sharing veg and option for more gravy to make it hotter ! Could have had some stuffing too or more side options. Cranberry sauce was asked for and super cold and small portion. For a roast dinner it didn’t win especially for the price just stick to Toby. But it’s a nice pub for a drink and canal view. You have to log your parking at the bar. Menu for food drink and puddings is vast with good variety.

Second time here, honestly amazing food and polite staff but both times I've been it takes so long to get the food out. Both times I've been (once in the afternoon for lunch, one in the evening for dinner) we had to chase up the drinks after waiting for 30 minutes, food usually arrived after 40 minutes.
