About us

This beautiful 17th century Grade II Listed thatched country pub, is perched on the hedgerow-lined St Albans Road, alongside Chequers Lane, and surrounded by the green and pleasant fields and woodland of Hertfordshire. Behind it, the old River Ver trickles tranquilly through the picturesque countryside and lush wetlands of the Ver Valley. Walkers can follow the Ver Valley Walk all the way to the Colne, near Watford.

With its rustic oak beams and cosy wood burners, it's ideal for fireside dining, while the large, leafy beer garden outside is an idyllic place to gather friends and family on lazy summer days. Visitors can get a real flavour of the past, especially when sampling the traditional pub food, delicious seasonal meals and Sunday roasts, served with a glass of fine wine or a perfectly pulled smooth cask ale.

We popped in here after a day at Whipsnade Zoo, friendly staff, nice choice of beers etc - we only had picky bits, cheesy garlic bread, fries etc - but good size portions and came out in a very reasonable time. Plenty parking here, well worth checking out 😃

We came on Sunday (4 of us) aged between 86 & 12. My nan has mobility issues but having the ramp to walk up from the car park is a great touch. Myself and my nan both had the roast pork which was lovely and plentiful. My husband who is vegetarian had the mushroom wellington, again he enjoyed it but said could have done with a little bit more filling. Our 12 yr old who has special needs had chicken goujons which he enjoyed. We also had puddings which was very nice. It was very pleasant not too noisy and crammed in. The staff and service was excellent. Would definitely return.

I really liked the calm and cozy atmosphere of this place. A beautifully decorated Christmas pub. Polite and attentive staff, fast service. They asked several times if anything else was needed. I really enjoyed the Sunday roast. Delicious potatoes and meat, excellent gravy and bacon-wrapped sausages. It was very filling, tasty and a lot! We couldn't eat everything. Thanks to the chef and staff for such great service.

For me this was perfect. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was plentiful and promptly served. Can't fault it. And the chocolate brownie dessert was the best I've had in a long time! 5 stars Atmosphere was perfect for me as it was quiet and low key.

Bit disappointing to be honest. Service was very friendly and attentive and the staff were great. But the wait for food was over an hour and when it arrived, it was quite lacklustre. (See pictured the vegetarian burger ordered with no bun… not sure where the skin-on fries, onion rings and salad went)
