In 2013, a much-loved Cambridge institution closed its doors after 173 years’ trading. Howes Cycles claimed to be the oldest bicycle shop in the country and rumour has it that Charles Darwin, famed for his ‘Theory of Evolution’, bought a bike from here.
Fast forward a century or two and you’ll now find this quaint old building has a new lease of life – as a bar and restaurant, with a quirky interior designed to celebrate the heritage of the original shop.
Saddles and handlebars have been cleverly designed as wall art and everywhere you look, bicycle parts have been fashioned into ornaments or table lamps. Open all day for brunch, lunch and dinner, The Old Bicycle Shop provides a unique setting for all sorts of occasions, from a quick coffee and brunch to a special dinner with friends. We take pride in serving fresh, locally-sourced food for all tastes, with plenty of tempting choices for the vegetarians and vegans among you.
Settle down and enjoy the sheltered sun in our courtyard, or just grab a pint and watch the world go by. You can also use one of our private spaces for a business meeting or special occasion. We look forward to welcoming you soon!.
Not too busy on a weekday. The staff are friendly. The environment is spacious and chill. No rush. Coffee is alright, average Cambridge level. Croissants are among the largest ones I’ve seen. Not many layers but my friends still like them. Sweet potato fries are excellent. Crunchy and nicely seasoned. Looking forward to try the lunch items, though the options seem quite limited and lacks uniqueness.
Christmas party for work, advertised a 3 course meal. I paid for this only to be told they cant do a gluten free roast nor any gluten free dessert. I might add the gluten free options that they did do were extremely minimal and poor. So after paying 35, i had a bit of venison, some veg and some potatoes. Do better.
Expensive Small portions. Gave a lot Sides and was tasty like the roast potatoes. Extremely slow service and they forgot multiple times our drinks but the waitress offered a double so made up for it. they only remembered our desserts when we decided to cancel. Wouldn’t visit again
Our time at the "Old Bicycle Shop" in Cambridge was a culinary delight! The cosy atmosphere, accented by candlelight, set the stage for an exceptional dining experience. Starting with the Pumpkin Ravioli and "The Tandem" platter, followed by The Seared Sea Bass and The Lemon Cheesecake we were left thoroughly satisfied. The warm welcome and attentive service of the staff, combined with the unique bicycle-themed decor, added a charming touch. For those seeking a cosy dining experience in Cambridge, "Old Bicycle Shop" is a must-visit.
Selected this restaurant for it's vegetarian options. Amazing starter of baked courgette and whipped feta. Tasted fresh with great textures and flavours. However the main of spinach gnocchi was dense and stodgy. It didn't taste cooked and for the price charged, expected much better. Service was fairly slow with over half hour wait for main.
