We are a 80 cover award winning Country Pub & Restaurant with a good selection of wines, ales and locally sourced food.
We are just south of the village of Theale, opposite Hosehill Lake. The Fox & Hounds is believed to be around 200 years old and was originally a drinking venue for local farmers back in the early 1800's, it was known then as the Drum & Monkey. The village of Theale has had the nickname of 'The Ale' due to fact of having 13 public houses on the high street alone crammed between many family run businesses.
Lovely vegetarian roast on a Sunday. No booking and reasonably priced. Also the house beer is excellent!
What a disappointment. The fox and hound is usually a go to for me and my partner so we eagerly booked a table here to celebrate my birthday. We arrived for our 18:30 booking and was out the door by 19:10. We were greeted by a nice young man who took our drinks and food order, all was well up until this point. We got given our food by a young barmaid/waitress who asked if we would like any sauces, which we did. After a few minutes and my chips turning cold, she appeared behind the bar, to talk to her colleagues. I then had to get up and ask for the sauces again. She then came back to our table with our sauces and said that she had made them but then forgotten all about it. My partners steak was supposed to be cooked med-rare and came out blue. Now if any of the three employees had done a check back, this would have been quickly resolved, however they were all too busy talking to a couple of regulars at the bar to bother with us. After finishing our food the same waitress came over asked if we were done and if we wanted desserts we said no we would like the bill. She then quickly came back with the bill and then a few minutes later the card machine. We paid and then got ready to leave. Not once were we asked if everything was ok, there was simply no people skills whatsoever and as we walked out the main door we heard a faint ‘thanks for coming’ from the young man who had greeted us just 40 minutes before. Never have I felt so unwelcome in a restaurant, it was almost like they were too busy with their friends to deal with actual guests coming to eat and drink. As for spending £20 for a steak, that is fine, but at least get a chef that can cook it properly ! Embarrassing from the fox and hounds restaurant! Theale
Beautiful little pub the staff were so friendly and the food was absolutely delicious..the beer garden was nice so we sat out there and had our meal can’t fault anything from out visit when we went also nice they are dog friendly would definitely recommend to anyone passing for food or a drink
The service was really friendly and they were very attentive. Unfortunately I would say the food really let it down. We had the chicken burger for main - chips were cold, the coating on the chicken didn't taste good at all. The onion rings were really greasy. We had brownie for dessert - unfortunately the texture was very off - and parts of it were burned which gave it a bad taste. Some of it was powdery and some was very cakey. Can't fault the location though - I would just order differently next time
This pub is just fantastic. The owners, Chris and Sean, have worked tirelessly to make this pub something special - and it shows. Fantastic food, great atmosphere, super warm welcome and the best hosts you could wish for. The menu is varied and interesting and they cater for all. Extremely dog friendly ( they have their own menu!) and nothing is too much trouble. Highly recommended +++
