About us

This characterful traditional Inn dates back to the 18th century when it was originally a smallholding. Between 1840 and 1921 the Inn’s walls housed a factory producing aerated water, drawn from a well at the back of the building. However the enterprising Hodgeson family, which occupied the premises at the time, also retailed beer from the 1840’s.

With generous parking, at the back and even more just over the road, guests can enjoy the summer sunshine on seating at the front or in the secluded beer garden at the back. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and there are plenty of off-road trails from the front door, including the Latterbarrow pathway, right next to the pub.

Beloved by walkers, climbers, cyclists and a regular haunt for hamlet residents, its friendly and relaxed atmosphere has secured the pub’s place at the centre of things since the 1700s. You can look forward to a blazing open fire in the winter, and a welcome that’s just as warm in the summer months

Between refreshment, forays to Tarn Hows, Wray Castle, Hill Top - Beatrix Potter’s home, and the gorgeous village of Hawkshead are also strongly recommended. And if all that dashing about gets too much, there’s always the option of a comfy bed and a hearty Cumbrian breakfast in one of the Inn’s refurbished guest rooms. In a setting that’s been a settlement for many hundreds of years it’s a real treat to be part of it.

Whether you’re visiting us on your own, as a family or with a large group, we are delighted to welcome you to The Outgate. We can easily accommodate large groups and have all of the facilities for private functions. Just give us a call to discuss your requirements on 015394 36413 or email theoutgateinn@btconnect.com.

Signs outside with open times but all locked up looking like closed for business. Stuff on tables seen through dirty windows, not looking like it's ready to open any time soon! No indication of closure on their website

Staying only a few metres away from the outgate inn only to find it closed for most of the week. If meals not available then surely a beer would have been. It is the main summer holiday.

Arrived with hopes of dinner. Already found nothing available Hawkshead. Although all tables reserved, got us in on 1 if we could be out by time of reservation. Had meals & drink. Would've had pudding but no one came back to take our order. Burgers & chips. Good standard pub fare. A few dogs in, odd table or bar 4 drinks only.

Ordered fish and chips, was OK, but not stand out good. No tomato ketchup either, but I did see one of the staff with 2 bottles in hand later, must have been out to buy some.

Had dinner last night. 😎 The Sloppy Joe Burger was the best I have ever had. The photos on the site do not do it justice. Chef, that was fantastic. Hats off. Little bread, but beautiful. Burger to die for. Excellent Stuff. The pub wasn’t bad either!!!🙄Many thanks
