Work is to start on a major refurbishment to reopen The Greyhound pub on School Lane in Harlow by Heineken owned Star Pubs & Bars and new licensee Matt Sendall. The project will bring to an end uncertainty amongst residents about The Greyhound’s future since its closure in January.

Work is expected to being by the end of the February with the pub scheduled to reopen in early April.

The investment will transform the rundown pub into a quality family friendly traditional pub designed to serve the needs of the whole community as well as users of the adjacent Harlow Town Park.

Matt, who was born in Harlow, is returning to the town to take over The Greyhound. “I’ve worked in pubs for years and wanted a pub of my own since I was 13. When I saw The Greyhound was available I knew it was ‘the one’ for me. It’s a beautiful building in a picturesque setting. This part of Harlow is crying out for a good pub and I want to make it the hub of the community again,” says Matt.

Outside the Grade II listed building, which dates back to the 1700’s, will be carefully renovated and restored. The garden at the front of the pub will be relandscaped and a new deck laid.

Inside The Greyhound will be fully refurbished throughout. A snug will be created complete with a real fire and features such as wooden beams will be preserved to retain the pub’s character. The new décor will be traditional in keeping with The Greyhound’s heritage but with contemporary touches. Dining areas will be added and the kitchen will be completely upgraded to enable Matt to introduce freshly prepared food. The menu will feature pub classics as well as chef’s specials and produce will be locally sourced wherever possible.

Barista quality coffee and homemade cakes will be served throughout the day to meet the needs of park users. Dogs will be welcome too. “Water bowls and dog biscuits are on order,” says Matt.

Matt is determined to build The Greyhound’s reputation for beer as well as food and is adding three cask ales. Work will include installing state of the art cellar equipment to ensure The Greyhound serves the perfect pint.

“The plans for the pub are stunning. I hope by restoring The Greyhound to its former glory we are able to benefit the wider neighbourhood too,” says Matt.

Tim Galligan Star Pubs & Bars Operations Director said: “We feel fortunate that such an experienced and enthusiastic operator as Matt is taking on The Greyhound as his own and is working with us to revive its fortunes. Heineken is a passionate supporter of the great British pub and is investing in pubs like The Greyhound to help them deliver excellent quality, attract customers and thrive at the heart of their communities for years to come.”
