About us

Being the oldest pub on the Royal Mile and the second oldest in Edinburgh is quite an accolade. The name of the establishment refers to the building’s previous responsibility as the city’s tollhouse, and the kitchen downstairs now occupies the space where jail cells, for those who didn’t pay the toll, once stood. Nowadays however, there’s a much more welcoming atmosphere. A stone’s throw from the new Scottish Parliament buildings and Holyrood Palace, traditional Scottish food can be found in this venue. For those after a quiet coffee, the Tolbooth Tavern is ideal, whilst sections of the pub can also be booked for meetings, parties or performances. Finally, in the evenings, you’ll find everything from poker and domino nights to whisky tasting.

We found this pub as wandering around Edinburgh at nighttime. The food is unexpectedly good and the staffs are so friendly and so kind to offer us a table for 1 hour without reservation. We orders Cullen Skink (traditional smoked haddock soup with potato, onion and cream, served with bread & butter) - highly recommend this! If you are looking for Haggis to try, try Haggis, Neeps & Tattoes Stack (with whisky cream sauce), we ordered the one in Starter menu and the portion is big enough for both of us to try the famous Haggis and it’s worth the hype! The next one to try is Stornoway Black Pudding Fritter (with fried bloomer topped with poached egg) - we tried Black pudding for many times but this is the best one so far! The mixed salad in Side menu is so fresh and big enough for 2 people so you don’t need to order salad in Main course menu. For drink we tried Draught beer Deuchars IPA and hot camomile tea. The meal costs us £40 with tip and we are so happy with the meal.

Lovely traditional Scottish pub in the heart of Edinburgh. Food was amazing , we had black pudding and mackerel starters with fish of the day as a main. Portions were generous and everything was fresh. Beer was maltsmiths lager which was very refreshing Service was amazing and very attentive , would definitely recommend.

A fantastic old pub serving an array of local brews and whiskeys… as well as any other drink you may fancy. Service was excellent and our bartender Luke was entertaining and very informative. We inquired about the place and got a brief history about it served alongside our great draught beer. It is an excellent spot to rest your feet and take in some local grub and libations.

Lovely pub very close to city centre and station. Great choice of meals including plenty of options for vegetarian diners - including delicious veggie haggis, neeps and tatties. Highly recommended.

I recently dined here with my mate and decided to try their fish and chips, and I must say, it was a delightful experience. The fish was perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a flavorful batter that complemented the fish beautifully. The chips were also spot-on - golden and crispy. The portion size was generous, and the meal was served piping hot. The ambiance of the pub added to the overall enjoyment of the meal. I highly recommend trying their fish and chips; it's a true treat for your taste buds.
