A quintessential old English pub set in the heart of the medieval citadel of Rye, The Standard has always been favoured by residents and visitors alike as ‘the local’. Part of the fabric of the towns close knit community a personal, relaxed and warm welcome awaits you. The oldest part of the building dates back to 1420. Originally two separate dwellings (note the two front doors) it was merged and became licensed as The Standard Inn around 1600. Not having been subjected to the ‘modern wine bar’ or ‘theme pub’ treatment it still holds all of its original charm and character. The pub is run by landlord Jonathan Breeds who’s family can be traced back in Rye several centuries. We believe that when visiting such a unique town, you should feel part of it and experience its living history. |
