Steeped in tradition, yet bang up to date, the Woolpack has been a McMullen pub since 1856 – and brewing has taken place here since 1743!
A picturesque pub packed with McMullen heritage on the River Lea, just a moment from the centre of Hertford, the Woolpack’s the ideal haven from the crowds. Step through the glass lobby to discover a roaring log fire, historic timbers and good old-fashioned comfort with a stylish modern twist – featuring historic artefacts unearthed from the brewery vaults, such as the deeds to pubs from the last century and the centre table that was a McMullen sign in another life!
Enjoy locally crafted real ales, created using water drawn from the nearby McMullen well, hand selected fine wines (hic!), single malts, world beers, glorious shakes and credible ethical coffee.
We love a really good burger – and ours are unique, tender and fresh, served in brioche buns and perfected by us for you! Feeling healthy? Go naked (sans bun!) or enjoy fresh salads with a Woolpack twist.
Weather permitting, you can eat, drink and be merry alfresco on our scenic riverside terrace (bookings welcome)!
Eyes on the future but feet firmly in the past – enjoy the Woolpack!.

Been in today with friends . Had a great time the staff was very welcoming and caused an instant good vibe. Loved the chicken wings . Will be returning
I asked Nash for a hot chocolate at 7:30pm on a friday but Nash decided to tell me he has already closed the machine when they shut at 12am, and when i asked why he said “cause i can oh well” I think this is no way to speak to a paying customer and they should really re think there choice of staff!!!!!!!! I will not be RETURNING ever again. Disgusting.
Im sorry to have to do this but my dad wouldn’t allow me to complain at the time. I’ll start with the burger, dry/not fresh brioche bun, over seasoned patty with black pepper. Small sticky wobbly table. And filthy glasses. One of the dishes had to be sent back because it was cold. I won’t be coming back not even to drink. I’ve worked in hospitality 12 years so I know how things should be and how they shouldn’t be. Heed my advice and don’t eat here unless sub par is what you’re into. Really disappointing Christmas lunch, I’m annoyed we had to pay for it tbh.
Avoid the food. Great river location. I tried the chicken wings. Wish I hadn't. Probably the worst chicken wings I've ever had. The chicken and sauces seemed well past its best with little flavour. The meat looked odd too. I was hungry but couldn't stomach it. Food was very disappointing. My girlfriend who finished mine was then ill overnight.
Great place in amazing riverside setting. Had a veggie burger & chips that was excellent & served by very friendly staff. Definitely recommend a visit
