About us

Occupying a prominent corner site at the heart of Church Street and at the front of the town’s main car park is the Derwent Arms, a popular and spacious public house. The Derwent Arms public house has traded for many years as a free house and has been in the ownership of the Rushworth family for the past fourteen years. The pub has one large open plan trading area split into different parts with the main bar servery to the centre of the trading area with ample sitting and standing areas. To the left is a dining and function area with 40 dining covers. The bar servery has a return frontage to the two games areas with two pool tables and darts boards. The bar serves a selection of beers, lagers, spirits, bottles and non alcoholic drinks. Food is available from the menus on a lunchtime and most evenings and, throughout the daytime on a Saturday and Sunday.

There are several large screen TV’s for showing major sports events. There is a raised stage area for bands and various events such as Disco’s and Quiz Nights as they arise. The pub has teams part of the Norton and Malton pool league and darts teams part of the Malton and Norton darts league. The pub has wheelchair access and disabled WC’s. There is a beer garden to the front and ample car parking to the rear and side for about 15 cars with the town main free car park just beyond this.

The pub is famed for its floral boxes and displays during the summer months. It has won Yorkshire in Bloom and Town in Bloom awards on several occasions. The pub is also heavily involved in the community sponsoring its own football, cricket, rugby and golf teams.

Nice clean pub... a bit too 'commercial' to be a true English pub for my liking but I'll most probably pop in for a pint next time I'm in Norton.

We went for a walk with the dogs and called in here for lunch. It was empty except for us, but it was a weekday. Lovely attentive bar person and a good choice of drinks. Quite an extensive menu, but we chose from the lunchtime one. Very tasty fresh food, we would definitely recommend. Dog friendly too, thanks

Dec 2019 review. We stopped in again with family for Sunday lunch the weekend after Christmas. Once we figured out what everyone wanted we had to go to the bar to order, no table service there. Unfortunately they only had turkey on for the roast dinner, but they were very accommodating with substituting a steak. We had a mixed array of pies and steaks and roast dinners, the overall consensus was that a lot of the food tasted a bit dry and rubbery, most likely microwaved or our of a bag. After dinner some of us decided to have dessert, they were out of vanilla ice cream so we had to go with chocolate for our chocolate cheesecake. The cheesecake was nothing to write home about, it was kind of warm which really surprised us as it is typically served fresh from the refrigerator. Others decided on the sticky toffee pudding and said that is was cold and they were expecting it to be much hotter. All in all I would say this wasn't our best experience at this pub as far as the food is concearned. The staff were very friendly and helpful, but the food was rather slow coming out and not all at the same time. The bathrooms were not in the best shape and I was informed the ladies was completely out of toilet roll. The gents just had paper napkins of some kind. ***old 5 star review from 2017*** We went here for lunch with family and even though they had the main dining area fully reserved, we were seated fairly fast over near the bar, the tables were pretty small and cramped but we managed. I ordered the giant Yorkshire pudding and sausage, my wife had the haddock and chips, my dad had a steak pie, and my mum had a giant Yorkshire pudding with beef. All food was top notch and everyone was thoroughly satisfied. The staff were all very polite and attentive but didn't hover. Great atmosphere, the place was empty when we arrived but buzzing by the time we left. Will be back next time we're in town.
